Following Saturday’s 6-2 win at home against Forest Green Rovers in the First Round of The Emirates FA Cup, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what they learned from the match.

You can discuss what has been said in this article HERE, as well as many other topics on our 100% Imps forum! We have also published a Lincoln City v Forest Green Rovers Quiz, which can be found below the first three things. Every page view helps raise money for Lincoln City Football Club!

Here’s what Chesterimp said:

1. The gap between the best teams L1 and best in L2 is significant. Against Doncaster and Portsmouth, we were given no time or space and struggled. Against FGR their set up offered time and space which we exploited to the full.

2. A young defence remains vulnerable, not of any consequence today but need Walsh’s composure and Bridcutt’s experience sooner rather than later to sustain progress in the league.

3. ‘Young’ Harry Anderson is now one of our senior players in fact and in performance. He’s taking the responsibility and setting the example. The improvements in fitness, decision making and execution are a world away from the slightly lost soul of a year ago in the wake of his mentors’ departure.

What was notable about the two National League games between Lincoln and Forest Green in the 2016-17 season?

And here’s what PWould said:

1. We have so much flair in the squad. It is hard for opposing teams to keep all of them quiet and yesterday, in particular, we had 3 or 4 players on fire.

Anderson, Grant, Scully and Johnson. The rest weren’t bad either. I loved the pass and move at pace and Village Green at times could not live with it.

2. We clearly do have some strength in depth. Depending on counting, we had at least 6 first team players, either not playing or not starting. Allied to this, is a clear method and style which means new players coming into the team can fit in pretty seamlessly, without too much dip in overall quality. I think that is a reflection of the coaching. Also, several players can play in different positions, which gives us plenty of tactical flexibility and makes us hard to play against, when we bring our A-game.

3. We are a work in progress and there is plenty of room for improvement. The defence, especially missing Bridcutt holding and key central defenders was a mixed bag. I am not yet sure what our best combinations are as yet, but Montsma and Eyoma are first choice. Then pool any of Roughan, Melbourne, Walsh Jackson and Edun. Harry did a good job as a dynamic wing-back but I feel he may struggle defensively against a lively winger. I hope to see young Sean at a live game before he is sold on for a vast amount.
