Ahead of tomorrow night’s match away at Carlisle United in the Second Round of the EFL Trophy, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to progress.

Here’s what NottyImp said:

1. Do not concede first. If we do, it will be game over as we cannot score and morale is shot.

2. Find some way to shore up the midfield. Our current set-up is slow, static, energyless, lacking in strength and the will to win the ball. Either current players step up and find some “minerals” or we need to try something different.

3. Play for penalties. Penalties give us a 50/50 shot at winning. This is much higher than our chance of winning in open play. So, we should play extremely negatively and start time-wasting from the first minute. MA should ring Sir Gareth for some tips and tricks.

And here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. Start the game with quickness of thought and play. We do tend to start games slowly and try then to pick up the speed later in the game. Not easy when you are chasing a result. We need to be sharp from the kick-off and get at them with quick thinking and not overly elaborate passing movements.

2. Midfield. This area needs a re-think. Fiorini looks shattered to me and these two cup games are the perfect opportunity to give him a rest which he wasn’t able to take when the International call-ups came about. This should then give a chance to others, specifically Sanders who really needs a run of games to show what he can bring to this team. Those selected really need to ensure they are in a position to support whomever leads the line as second ball recovery just isn’t happening on the whole.

3. Have a shot from our own area. Worked well in 2004. Might be worth another pop.
