Ahead of the midweek EFL Trophy visit to perennial opponents Accrington Stanley, Michael Skubala explored the notable level of competition for places amongst the defenders at his disposal.

Defensive Options: The Imps have shown their resilience under MS including some clean sheets. MS observed that all of the defenders have been very solid resulting in considerable competition for places, which is exciting to see.

“It’s a credit to them really, with the desire to keep the ball out of the net….and get those clean sheets”.

All of the defenders bring different qualities to their game so rather than making wholesale changes it will be necessary to make tactical tweaks around considerations such as the best combinations to suit specific opponents.

Build up to the Next Match: The players have been in for training Friday and Monday but were given the weekend off with a view to the upcoming busy Christmas period. MS has been working on a balanced selection of tactical approaches including solidity when out of possession, working towards an effective press to regain the ball before looking at progressive options once back in possession.

Consistency of Younger Players: MS was asked about the relevance of consistency amongst the younger players in the squad with TJ Eyoma and Dylan Duffy referenced. TJ has shown his character and professionalism allied to being ‘good on the ball’ during his performances in front of MS. DD has also been rewarded with an end product for his efforts, at Cambridge.

With the younger players it is both a challenge and important to see those levels of consistency; when aspects including playing quality, reliability and enthusiasm start to show that is when it becomes apparent.

Accrington: The Imps opponents will doubtless prove tough opponents given they are a strong competitive side who are effective with set pieces. The FA Cup results (against lower-league opposition at the weekend) bear that out.

“We’ve got to be mindful and ready for what they throw at us”.

Alex Hamilton and Lukas Jensen do not appear to be distracted by facing their former side, with every indication they are simply focussed on the game.

The EFL Trophy is a match and competition that MS takes seriously, wants to win, progress in the competition, with a view to building the good habit of victories. Wishing to keep momentum building and going, he will be putting out a competitive team for the fixture accordingly.

MS was asked about the availability of the Sorensen, Roughan and Bishop trio which drew the response that one of them will be in contention for the game.
