Promotion-chasing Notts County won 2-0 that day, but Liverpool secured the title the following afternoon with a 2-0 win over Crewe in front of just 3,000 at Anfield.

We’re raising money for the Bradford Burns Unit this month and our target is £500.00. There are many ways you can help us reach this target. One of those ways is to have a go at our quizzes because they generate page views. Once you have had a go, share your results on Social Media, increasing the reach and page views!

If you haven’t already had a go at the quizzes, they can be found here: Quiz No.1, Quiz No.2, Quiz No.3, Quiz No.4, Quiz No.5, Quiz No.6, Quiz No.7, Quiz No.8, Quiz No.9 and Quiz No.10.

1. What amounted to £395,000 in 2016-17?

a) Prize money from the FA Cup run
b) Danny Cowley’s playing budget
c) Gate receipts for the season
d) Television broadcasting fees

4Q: £12,500 (Guiseley)
R1: £18,000 (Altrincham)
R2: £27,000 (Oldham)
R3: £67,500 (Ipswich)
R4: £90,000 (Brighton)
R5: £180,000 (Burnley)

Danny’s playing budget was lower than Chris Moyses’ had been for the season before, but Moyses did undoubtedly sign some very good players. Gate receipts would have been way over £395,000 – probably in the region of £2m. Television broadcasting fees are more difficult to calculate because smaller fees are paid for highlights; what we do know is that television fees for live matches amounted to £639,000.

2. Which former City manager was declared bankrupt in May 2014?

a) Steve Tilson
b) Chris Sutton
c) Peter Jackson
d) Peter Daniel

Sutton and his wife invested £100,000 with an accountant named Simon Grinter, who proved to be a fraudster running a £7.9m spread betting scam. He was jailed for six years in November 2013. Sutton’s total debts amounted to £330,000, which is some achievement for a player who was earning £25,000 per week at Celtic.

3. Who were the only team to win at Sincil Bank during the 1987-88 championship season?

a) Kidderminster Harriers
b) Sutton United
c) Wealdstone
d) Kettering Town

Kettering won 1-0 at SB on 30 September. Although tiny compared with today, the crowd of 3,156 was more than twice the size of some of the attendances from the previous season.

4. What was City’s record Football League victory prior to the 11-1 win over Crewe on 29 September 1951?

a) 8-0
b) 9-0
c) 9-1
d) 10-2

City set the previous record when they beat Halifax Town 9-1 on 16 January 1932 on their way to the Third Division North title. That was the day Frank Keetley famously set the club record of six goals in a match (notably all in the second half), which of course was equalled by Andy Graver against Crewe. City had equalled the record just six months prior to the Crewe match, when they beat Accrington 9-1 on 3 March 1951.

They also had a 10-2 win some years previously, which came in a Midland League match against Leek on 7 April 1890.

5. What was the record attendance at John O’Gaunts?

a) 4,000
b) 7,500
c) 9,800
d) 11,200

Sometimes given as 7,000, it came on 23 March 1894 – Good Friday – for the Second Division game against Notts County. Gates at the time usually amounted to 1,000 to 2,000, so it was a large turnout by anyone’s standards. Promotion-chasing Notts County won 2-0 that day, but Liverpool secured the title the following afternoon with a 2-0 win over Crewe in front of just 3,000 at Anfield.

County eventually finished in third place and qualified for the test matches. Unfortunately, they were beaten 4-0 by Preston at Olive Grove, the home of The Wednesday, in front of 8,000.

For their part, Liverpool were in their first season as a Football League club and went the entire season unbeaten in the league. They won promotion to the First Division by beating Newton Heath 2-0 in a test match at Ewood Park on 28 April in front of 5,000.

6. Who famously said, “You don’t get in Lincoln’s team unless you can kick the ball 80 yards without it bouncing.”?

a) Barry Fry
b) Brian Laws
c) Gary Lineker
d) Malcolm Macdonald

Malcolm ‘Supermac’ Macdonald, the manager of Fulham when they won promotion to the Second Division ahead of the Imps in 1981-82.

Fulham challenged strongly for promotion all season, and the original home game against Lincoln – scheduled for 9 January – had been postponed due to the weather. At that point, Lincoln were in the bottom eight and were just two points above the relegation zone. No worries there.

However, Macdonald was obviously disturbed to see Lincoln – just promoted from the Fourth Division – charging up the table behind them through February and March 1982. City turned a ten-point deficit into a table-topping four-point lead over Fulham within the space of two months, and Macdonald began the mind games in a television interview ahead of the game at Craven Cottage which had been rescheduled for 28 April. As it happened, that game was also postponed until 18 May, and we all know what happened that night.

I do wonder how the season would have ended, though, had Gordon Hobson not spent the last six games in plaster.

7. How many appearances did the unfortunate Drewe Broughton make for the Imps without scoring?

a) 16
b) 22
c) 31
d) 44

Unbelievably, 31.

8. On 29 March 1960, what did Dick Neal become the first former Lincoln City player to do?

a) Play for England
b) Play in a European final
c) Win an FA Cup winner’s medal
d) Win a League Championship medal

Neal was an integral part of the Birmingham City side that reached the final of the Inter Cities Fairs Cup (now effectively the Europa League) in 1959-60. They came up against a strong Barcelona side and, despite drawing the first leg 0-0 at St Andrew’s in front of 40,000, they went down 4-1 in the second leg in front of 70,000 at the Camp Nou.

Interestingly, future Imp Bunny Larkin was part of the side that reached the final, scoring an impressive four goals along the way including one in the semi-final. Unfortunately for him, he missed a flight to one of the away games and fell out of favour. By the time the final came around, he had been sold to Norwich.

Birmingham reached the final again in 1961 when they were beaten 4-2 on aggregate by Roma. Although named Birmingham’s captain that season, Neal had lost his place to Terry Hennessey and did not appear in the final.

9. What did Andy Graver unusually do in the friendly against Waterford on 19 May 1960?

a) He scored all 7 goals in a 7-6 win
b) He scored an own goal
c) He was sent off
d) He played in goal

He played in goal in the second half after keeper Bill Heath picked up an injury.

10. And a tough one to end with. Who is next in this sequence: Quentin Neill, William McMillan, George Fraser…?

a) John Garvie
b) John Campbell
c) Tony Emery
d) George Whyte

They are Lincoln City’s record appearance holders in chronological order:
Neill: 139 appearances (1888-1894)
McMillan: 195 appearances (1898-1906)
Fraser: 342 appearances (1901-1911)
Emery: 424 appearances (1945-1958)

The first three were all Scottish, which is why I included three more Scots – Garvie, Campbell and Whyte – as optional answers.

The record is now held by Grant Brown, of course, with 469 between 1989 and 2002.
