Following yesterday’s 1-0 defeat away at Port Vale in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learnt from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. Underestimate no team in this division. I think Mark Kennedy has said as much a few weeks ago. There are no shock results in this League. Every team is capable of beating any opponent on their day. There were some discussions that after the run of games we had coming into it, this, on paper looked like an easier proposition. We know how that so often plays out, many times to our combined anguish. Now I am certain that Kennedy and the coaching staff are well aware of this, but some supporters also need to realise that there are no gimmes in this division.

2. The 5-2-3 formation can take it out of the players. Since the new formation was introduced in the away match at Bolton, it has by and large been played with virtually the same players, Barring the Jackson/Walsh swapsies those who took the field this afternoon have worked really hard to become a very hard team to beat. By doing that you are often chasing the game as the opposition will have something like 60-70% possession. That can be an exhausting way of playing the game and I think it told as the match progressed. It seemed to be quite a heavy pitch also which won’t have helped.

3. Chances have to be taken. At Barnsley, on Tuesday night we made a few decent chances but took one with a clinical piece of finishing. Today we honestly didn’t create that much but had a golden chance when Garrick was through on goal. That goes in and I think we win the match. It didn’t and we lost. Small margins but crucial margins. When a team is set up to keep it tight and play on the counterattack as we are, any chance such as that one have to be buried.
