Ahead of Saturday’s match away at Plymouth Argyle in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. Play Marquis and get him to patrol their 18-yard box. We have made several good chances in the last few games but on many occasions just haven’t had the right player causing a nuisance in the box to make that chance count. Our other attackers tend to prefer to have their opportunities fall to them away from either on the edge or just inside the penalty area. In Marquis, we have a player who will be that fox in the box we are missing. Given the chances made on the first half of the Cambridge game, Marquis scores four times out of five. But he will need that quality of service from the wings and that will be key to us getting the best out of him.

2. Concentrate to the very end. Last season’s game at Plymouth was a very entertaining one, but one we lost from a winning position. It turned out to be quite a key loss in the course of our season and in many ways (including injuries to key players in that defeat) was probably the game which changed how our season panned out. What could have been!. This aspect has carried on to this season. Injury time concessions in three recent games have cost us valuable points, lost points which still might come back to haunt us come May. So we really need to make sure that the necessary concentration is there for however long after the ninety minutes is still to play.

3. Don’t get carried away with the attacking potential we have available. Marquis, Cullen, and Whitaker look like excellent forward acquisitions. Maguire has found his shooting boots and Scully is back from injury. The attacking potential we have would grace any team in our league and possibly even The Championship. There is a danger though to try and shoehorn all these players into a formation that just might not work. We cannot overlook our other positions. Plymouth play with 3 at the back and largely a midfield 5. If we were to deploy just two midfielders into that scenario, they would be swamped and, as we know, that area of the pitch is crucial to winning games. We have to get the right balance and of that means that some of our new exciting attackers have to start from the bench, so be it.
