Ahead of the Charlton Athletic challenge, Mark Kennedy expanded upon how he has utilised training time with the players so far this season.

Approach to Training: Pre-season is very important and as such MK feels the time frame of his arrival was a very big plus that enabled a lot of excellent groundwork to be laid down. Since then, the emphasis with the players has been on reaffirming what ‘we’ do and what it looks like.

Naturally, within a match, the game is always evolving but MK takes the view, “Whatever shape we play, the principles always remain the same”.

After a busy season start and in particular fractured August, MK outlined how he had been able to utilise successive weeks without having mid-week matches to prepare for. He felt ‘they’ had a good week going into the Bolton game, being pleased to be able to replicate that for the visit of Charlton Athletic.

“We feel we’ve done a lot of hands-on coaching the last few weeks…..we did continue that today, but we wanted to give a little love back to the players as well. I would like to think we’ve been very specific and hands-on over the last few, two weeks, we’ve not, put it this way we’ve not wasted any day”.

Injury Update: Tom Hopper sustained a back injury some seven to ten days ago which is proving problematic so he will not be available this weekend. More encouragingly Joe Walsh is doing very and he along with Jake Davenport will resume full training next Monday.

MK clarified the situation regarding the option of selecting Danny Mandriou. He explained that for some players there were low-compromise recovery plans in place that sought to re-introduce them for twenty or thirty minutes at a time. However, that isn’t the approach for many players.

“Most of the lads that have come back, we’ve put them onto specific bespoke programs so that when they do come back to us, they are available for selection; Danny is one of those players”.

Charlton Athletic: “It’s nice to have a game at home which is important to us. We’ve had a good start at home so it will be a very tough game but one which we look forward to”.

Charlton are a side that all round have very good players available to them but do feature talented individuals at the top end of the pitch in particular. They have been on an unlucky run (of results) but regardless they are a side whose manager will undoubtedly be expecting them to be challenging for promotion by the end of the season.
