Following yesterday’s 2-0 win at home against Oxford United, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learned from the match.

1. There’s very little to choose between teams in this division. Oxford came into yesterday in good form and challenging at the top. We hadn’t won since October and had just dropped into the bottom four. An”There’s very little to choose between teams in this division. That makes predictions in this league very difficult. On any day, any team can beat whoever they are facing and when you consider some of the huge differences in budgets in this division that just shows what a great league it is to be part of.
2. I really don’t want to get carried away with one game, but you can quickly see why Morgan Whitaker was identified as our number 1 transfer target. He is a very talented and clever player. Some of his first touches yesterday were sublime and they seemed to galvanise players around them to try something different, attempts that without a player such as him being on the pitch haven’t been attempted for some time. He has very good feet but also a football brain. Simple things I saw yesterday which might not otherwise have been seen were a couple of occasions where he could have challenged for a header out wide but he stepped slightly back from the defender having quickly realised where their header was likely to land. His running off the ball made space for Scully’s goal and he set a very high bar for the next few games.
3. You can’t beat going to a game in person. Yesterday’s match was allowed on iFollow and I get the reasons why some decided that in an age of a pandemic they decided to watch via a screen. Everyone must assess their own personal circumstances and make the right decision for themselves and their nearest and dearest. That is everyone’s priority. Physically being there though, you just can’t beat when you are watching your team play well and get a fantastic result. Walking away from the ground down dogs**t alley I just happened to be close behind a father and son. The lad, who looked around 6, was grinning and was thanking his dad for taking him to his first game and that he couldn’t wait to go back again. Made me smile and think that is what this game does to you and what this football club means to us all.
