Lincoln City 0-3 Gillingham: Three Things We Learned

|

Following last night’s 3-0 defeat at home against Gillingham in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what Gratzimp said:

1. We have gone from a team that can potentially beat anyone, to a team that can be beaten by anyone, Not potentially, definitely. The fact that our dreadful form is normally at home, gives rise to just how important the fans are. We are a young squad, that doesn’t know how to cope when we go behind, as there is no leader on the pitch to inspire any confidence, and rile up/gee up the team.

2. Covid and injuries have had a huge effect on the defensive line up and performances. Our Dutch CB has gone from world-beater pre-Covid, to rank amateur 2nd division Dutch footballer post-Covid, but again there is no direction at the back, no glue to hold them together, and our keeper that provided Cunning Stunts to save us has managed to swap the letters around a bit, and lost his confidence especially when we concede first. Reliance on new signings is misplaced – granted injuries played some part, but when a team is winning you don’t change it. If you do have to, change it back again when the players become fit again, and not keep persisting with players that are clearly not as good, and at times are a bloody liability.

3. We don’t really have the depth in our squad to mount a challenge, we have no leaders in the team, we may as well blow the final whistle if we don’t score 1st, as the heads go down, and panic sets in, stupid mistakes, miss placed passes, wrong options, most of all a complete lack of confidence and we are guaranteed to lose. Had we scored 1st today, I think we would have won the game, as it would have been like a message to the youngsters “Well we did that right, let’s do it again” type thing.

They say you don’t become a bad manager/team/player overnight. Well we haven’t, we have been flattering to deceive for a few weeks now, and have been found out.

Seriously dreading the game against the Mackems, they stuffed us 4-0 at Sinny Bank (it will never be LNER to me). I fear it could be double that at the Stadium of Light.
