Following last night’s 1-0 win away at Leyton Orient in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learnt from the match.

1. There will be far fewer draws under Michael Skubala. One of the most interesting things to come out of our new boss’s first press conferences has been his view that you should not be afraid to lose a game of football. We saw this in action in the win at Brisbane Road. In the preceding twelve months, we would have settled for a hard-earned point. Late on we pushed for the winner and it worked a treat. That attack where Hamilton scored we had players in abundance in and around their penalty area. That kind of attitude will get you late winners. It will also mean that some games will be lost. Consider only a few minutes before Ethan’s strike when Lucas Jensen made an excellent save to keep the game level. We had been caught by a swift breakaway due to the amount of players we had pushed forward. I’m quite content with this kind of football. Percentage wise you will win more games playing like this than you will lose and getting 3 points rather than losing 1 will push you up the table.

2. We won’t see the best of this team until those currently out injured are back. I’ll admit to being one of many who was critical of the first-half performance last night. Bit of a knee-jerk reaction on my part as the reality is that we clearly want to play in a more adventurous way now, but are lacking those players of quality who have been out of action for so long. I’m quite excited to see how the style of football will be played when we have Hackett, Bishop, Walker and House available. All of these players could thrive under these tactics. That will also translate to those players such as Mandroiu, Erhahon and Hamilton who will really enjoy that style when our better attackers are on the pitch.

3. We need to stop thinking Hakeeb Adelekun’s long throw are a dangerous attacking option. You need so much more than just sheer distance on long throws for them to be effective. High-looped hanging balls which for some reason always arc away from the penalty box are pointless. No attacker will get any purchase on them. Defenders can deal with them with ease. Compare that to a couple that Orient sent into the box from their defender James. Arrowed in with pace they caused us problems. If Adelakun can’t adapt his style of throw to that shown by our opponents, just forget about them as a tactic.
