The FourFourTwo League 2 Player of the Year was awarded at the 2009 Football League Awards dinner last night at the Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London.

In front of over 800 attendees from the world of football Shrewsbury’s Grant Holt picked up the prestigious award.

The 27 year old signed from Forest last summer for a Shrewsbury record transfer fee of £170,000 and must seem a snip as he has now slotted home 26 goals so far this season in all competitions, 5 coming in their demolition of Wycombe in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in October.

Other League 2 contenders where Wycombe midfielder Tommy Doherty and Brentford striker Charlie MacDonald.

After the dinner Holt spoke to FourFourTwo; ‘After leaving Forest, some people might have thought I’d taken a step back by joining Shrewsbury, but this award vindicates that decision,’ he said.

‘I was in and out of the side and my chances were made all the more difficult by the fact that we often played 4-5-1. Having chatted with Paul Simpson, I realised I was joining a progressive club that has the potential to play at a higher level.

‘The league is getting stronger with players filtering down from the Premier League – I’ve really enjoyed my first season. Scoring five goals in our 7-0 win at Wycombe? it was just one of those days where everything went right for us and every shot I had just seemed to go in.’

However, the award went to Wolves striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake – who was also named Championship Player of the Year – for his stunning effort at Charlton Athletic.

The May issue of FourFourTwo magazine features the full rundown of the Top 50 Football League Players, the Cardiff vs Swansea derby and interviews with Colchester boss Paul Lambert and Rotherham-supporting funnymen the Chuckle Brothers.
