Following last night’s 1-1 draw at home against Scunthorpe United in the EFL Trophy, which The Imps won 4-2 on penalties, I asked our members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what Chimpimp said:

1. The first two games have in some ways raised more questions than they have answers. Do we have defenders with good ability on the ball, is not one of them? The minefield of playing out from the back, as Vickers put Bostwick into trouble and then Bostwick lashed it at Bolger before he passed on the problem to his fullback seem like a distant memory… but the ball being crossed into our box without the feeling that a goal could well result, is also a distant memory.

Is our fragility to crosses something a bit of organisation can sort out or is it nigh on impossible to find good League One defenders that can also do the clever stuff? I’m hopeful it’s the former but it’s a question any opponent will now be giving our centre-halves plenty of opportunities to answer.

2. Another question we didn’t get much more of an answer on was Elbouzedi. Exciting prospect or just a frustrating watch? He runs with pace and carries the ball past opponents with ease at times but with little end product. Will he begin to pick out players in the box as he begins to develop an understanding of where the runs will be made. If he does then he would become a real threat to any side.

3. The good news is Harry Anderson provides a viable alternative. He had looked slightly lost without him mate the postman in his preseason outings… but he is strong, direct and now pretty experienced. He made some good defensive interventions and was effective on the right with goal threat, even before he scored. You need a mix in any good squad and with a long and demanding season ahead players like Harry may well have a significant part to play.

Indeed if Archibald and Elbouzedi manage to keep Harry sat on the bench for a majority of matches, then they will have turned out to be very good acquisitions.
