I’m afraid it isn’t as simple as some seem to think. Abandoning the season would be financially disastrous for many EFL clubs – also for some Premier League clubs – and some would go straight to the wall. Sponsorship deals and television money would have to be repaid for starters, which would represent a significant amount of money even for the smaller clubs. That money is not a gift, remember – it is essentially money paid up front in exchange for games to be played. Clubs would also be liable to refund the value of tickets pre-sold, which in Lincoln’s case would present a huge problem. Furthermore, a large percentage of the latest advance consists of loans. The problem, therefore, is not simply the lack of an income: it is severely compounded by the amount of money they would have to find to repay unforeseen liabilities, money which was probably spent long ago.

Imagine you’re top of a league having spent a bucket load more money than the other clubs to ensure you gain promotion, only to find there are only 8 matches left, the money’s all gone but you’re not actually going up and will be playing the same teams who should have been relegated yet again next season.

Basically, I don’t want to be playing Bolton next season.”

sedgleyimp: “All that I hope is that whatever is decided it isn’t then challenged through the courts as that would go on for possibly years. Not every club are going to be happy with whatever is finally decided. I just have a concern that any court challenge could put the next 2/3/4 seasons in doubt.”

Warrington Imp: “At present just cannot see the leagues been completed this virus is to go on for a long time, I think the Premier League will try and finish from a monetary point of view with their tv deals.

In fact, I doubt if next season will start as scheduled even if this season is scrapped we are in this for the long haul until a vaccine is found 12-18 months down the line.”

Currently we have no idea when next season can start.

So the EFL might as well plan for smaller, regional divisions – with fewer fixtures.

Suppose Lg1 was split into 4, 6 teams each.
We’d have 10 games in just over 2 months.
Depending on exactly when football re-starts, we get 2 or maybe 3 mini-seasons.

Promotion and Relegation can still apply.
Either with 4 teams up and down – or playoffs.

By shortening 2020-21, we can complete 2019-20.
Not to do so would be liking binning the time and money of players and fans.

And by dropping the likes of Plymouth versus Barrow, attendances should improve.
