How long have you supported Wigan Athletic?
46 years.
What were and now are your hopes and expectations for the 2023/24 season?
Mid-table obscurity, a season with nothing to play for by Easter. The last time I answered the questions we had been going through a bad spell and thought we had been saved by the then new owners. Then towards the end of last season, things were getting worse, points being deducted due to not paying the wages etc. Then we were days away from going out of existence. We started this season on minus eight points, so a season of steadying the ship was all we wanted.
What are your views on your manager?
Obviously, he is a bit of a hero at Wigan being one of our FA Cup-winning players he took over last season after a disastrous spell with Kolo Toure in charge. We ended up being relegated but you couldn’t attach any blame to SM. After all the off-field troubles last summer, he stuck with us and he has done well with the resources he has had relying on academy graduates, free transfers and loans.
Style of play and tactics – direct/passing/hybrid?
Generally passing it around playing out from the back.
One(s) to watch now and in the future?
Two that have really stood out this season are Sam Tickle and Charlie Hughes.
Random fact about your club
The former Soviet president, Gorbachev, was rumoured to have been a fan.
Which were your favourite and least favourite matches involving Wigan Athletic?
The FA Cup final is obviously up there as well as our European games simply because it was something I never thought would happen. The least favourite would be any of the drubbings we got in the Premier League.
At the start of the season, which sides did you think would finish in the top six and which did you think would finish in the bottom four?
I didn’t even give it a thought this year. Normally I would look at the division and try and make some prediction for promotion and relegation. Usually not being very accurate. However, after the summer we had I didn’t really care about anything apart from hoping we had enough to avoid relegation or worse.
What are your thoughts on Lincoln City?
The current boss has got you playing well and recently you have been banging them in. I certainly think you could make the playoffs. For selfish reasons, I hope you are still in this division next season as I can walk to Sincil Bank as opposed to a 2.5-hour drive each way for home games. That said I think if you were to get promoted you would find the championship very difficult.
If you could steal one Lincoln City player for your team, who would it be and why?
Although I live in Lincoln, I am actually struggling to name any players despite knowing a lot of Lincoln fans. I am sure that you have at least one player that could slot in easily. However the last time I answered this question I think I said Scully and we went and bought him and it didn’t turn out very well for us or him either.
What is your prediction for this match?
Although we seem to have struggled since we hit the 50-point mark I said a couple of weeks ago that we would drop points in our games against the teams in the bottom six (which we did getting 2 points from 3 games) and then would probably turn Lincoln and Portsmouth over so I am going for a 2-1 win for us.
