Following last night’s 3-0 win away at Gillingham in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. You have to admire the conditioning and professionalism of the players and the abilities of the backroom staff. You would never have thought that we had a really hard match 72 hours ago on a pitch made of treacle. We had over 100 minutes of play time tonight yet we were the strongest team of the pitch at the end of injury time. This has got to be the best-prepared set of players we have had in many a long time, perhaps ever.

2. Hit it to the big man just won’t cut it in this league. That was basically Gillingham’s only attacking tactic this evening. Yes, they put a lot of crosses in and tried to bully their way into making chances, but when you have central defenders as good as Jackson and Walsh to deal with it, that is a tactic that just will not get you to the top of this league. It will get you out of League 2, but to advance that bit further you need to adapt and that is why we are where we are.

3. Regan Poole looks on the system. I know he only played for a little under half an hour, but you can see instantly that he is our kind of player. A few little drops of the shoulder allowed him to bring the ball out of defence with ease. If TJ needs a rest that right-back spot is well covered.

Which legendary commentator was a director of Gillingham for seven years?

And here’s what NottyImp said:

1. We can cope with big, physical teams away. Our defence was astonishing. It effortlessly dealt with a bombardment of long-throws, corners, set-pieces and long balls.

2. Alex Palmer is a player we should sign. He is a ‘keeper you can build a defence and spine around. It may, of course, not be possible but I would prioritise his signature for next season.

3. We are lethal away. Just 2 goals conceded in 10 games and a new club record of 6 consecutive away wins. Astonishing.

4. McGrandles adds a lot to midfield. You don’t really notice him but he not only pops up with crucial goals, he acts as a midfield sweeper by keeping things effective and simple.

And finally, here’s what Chesterimp said:

1. Evans tried tactics which last season worked as the Imps turned in an abject display. He learned tonight the current version are different mustard. He acknowledged before the match we were one of the best in this league. He had his game plan to try and counter that, reliant on a physical game, Graham’s unpredictability and a certain amount of s**thousery. MA’s game plan and his players’ execution of it neutered all 3.

2. Us supporters have drooled over the beautiful football the Imps have produced this season, and it was on display tonight. The intricate move for the first goal, the build-up to the third, some of the other moves. But it is backed up with a real backbone to this side. Gnarly old warriors like Bridcutt, those heading in that direction like Jackson, Walsh and Hopper, the young guns like TJ, Tayo, Morgan and Brennan, all did their share at the coalface to make it happen. This is a class squad.

3. TJ is the proverbial brick. Watching the game, he played well, not as adventurous as usual but the way those in front of him worked, it wasn’t necessary. Then we learned afterwards he’d been ill but was determined to play. Balls of steel, young man, balls of steel.
