Danny Cowley talks to the press ahead of tomorrow night’s game at home against Wycombe Wanderers in League Two.

DC was very chipper and had clearly recovered from the Port Vale game, managing to bring a couple of lighthearted comments into proceedings.

Port Vale: Imps had a good first half and should have taken a lead into halftime. Fifteen minutes after halftime there wasn’t enough energy or impetus. Stepped it up for ten minutes and Port Vale ironically scored after City’s good spell. DC was left disappointed by the team response thereafter.

Visiting Wycombe Wanderers individuals: Gareth Ainsworth is a Lincoln Legend and even better person. Akinfenwa has the highest profile of League 2 players. A real handful and character; nice guy also. DC joked he saw him at the Football league Awards last night and sent some bottles of beer to his table.

Wycombe Match: They have physicality, running power, togetherness, team spirit, are hard working and have a clear game plan that they are good at. There is a lot to admire in their team but equally is looking forward to posing them problems. DC enjoys night games at home, particularly after Wembley. Although DC didn’t explicitly say it he arguably gave the impression that he sees a lot of what the Imps are about mirrored in the Wycombe set up. This was touched upon when DC spoke about playing styles where he made a more direct verbal parallel.

Playing Styles: Both teams go directly into the final third before playing from there. The Imps have the personnel to do that effectively. That creates front foot, aggressive, exciting football with goalmouth action. Criticism usually comes from teams that cannot deal with that. Lots of managers near the bottom of the league table talk about the right way of playing; normally off the back of a defeat. Football is not complicated, a clear style is required that is suited to the players who are comfortable with it bringing them confidence. League 2 is no place for philosophy and ideals.

Miscellaneous: DC quipped that SB on a Tuesday night was a fantastic educational experience for the children and encouraged the parents to bring them along as the kids brought great energy. Regarding the run in DC saw the games in hand as tough matches and declared that the upcoming games were the biggest examination of the team for the season so far; only focus and determination would do. Josh Vickers is to have a 12-week post-injury scan to hopefully give him the all clear to push on. The squad had a couple of aches and pains from the weekend but nothing troubling.
