Des Buckingham has emerged as the latest leading candidate for the vacant Lincoln City head coach position as the club’s hunt for Mark Kennedy’s successor shows no real signs of reaching a conclusion.

You can discuss this on the forum HERE!

Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny’s name was thrust into the speculative mix just recently after a story appeared in the Irish Daily Mirror, suggesting the Imps had approached the 52-year-old, with reports that his tenure in the hotseat is about to come to an end.

He was directly asked about the rumours yesterday, telling a reporter: “Speculation can lead to anything, but for me the biggest privilege is to manage the Republic of Ireland. It’s a huge privilege.”

While Bradley neither denied or confirmed the reports, his name has been added to a varied melting pot that has also included Damien Duff and Stephen Bradley, along with Leam Richardson, Nathan Johnson and, obviously, Danny Cowley, along with current interim boss Tom Shaw, although all those names could be completely wide of the mark, now the Mumbai City head coach has suddenly appeared in the reckoning.

Buckingham had been linked with the vacant post at Oxford United after Liam Manning left for Bristol City, but the U’s interest seems to have cooled.

Now it’s Lincoln’s turn to be linked with a head coach, one who never played football professionally despite being on the books of both Reading and Oxford as a youth, and then turning his hand to teaching at Oxford & Cherwell Valley College, before returning to Oxford as a coach.

He has since enjoyed coaching spells at Wellington Phoenix, Stoke City and with the New Zealand international side, at various levels, before heading to Mumbai via a short stint at Melbourne City as assistant manager.

Buckingham lead Mumbai City to the Indian Super League title back in February, where they broke 15 records along the way, including the longest-ever unbeaten run in the competition. In May he was named coach of the year in India, and earlier today he shot to the head of the betting in the ‘Next Lincoln City manager’ market, being shortened into odds-on before, intriguingly, the odds were taken down from the site.

He had been linked to the Celtic job in the summer, while Charlton were another club sniffing around before they appointed Michael Appleton. It was said at the time that Mumbai City refused the Addicks permission to speak to him, although could that also be the case with the Imps?

With Lincoln City CEO Liam Scully revealing that they were surprised by the calibre of some of the interested parties, Buckingham potentially fits that profile, and also of a young up-and-coming head coach, although is this yet another ‘red herring’ as the Sincil Bank faithful wait to see who their new boss is?
