Ahead of today’s match away at Cambridge United in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. Use width and pace. It was virtually a year to the weekend that we racked up that highly impressive 5-1 win at the Abbey Stadium. Cambridge on the day looked quite a poor team, but improved as the season progressed and were never in any real danger of relegation. This year they have had a very good start and sit in 7th. They have won all three home games to date. It will be a much sterner test than that we faced last September. But that doesn’t make them unbeatable on their pitch. They sit 7th, but with a minus goal difference. Burton put three past them in their last home match. They are beatable. The way to do this will be to utilise the skills and pace of Jack Diamond and Jordon Garrick (if hopefully fit). Give these players the chance to run at their defence and turn them and we will make chances that lead to three points.

2. Defend a bit higher. We have for some time had the annoying habit of dropping to the edge of the 18 yard box whilst trying to hold onto a lead. Very often it has cost us a late goal, none more that the game against Fleetwood seven days ago. We do that against a team like Cambridge and we will suffer. Joe Ironside is a decent striker at our level and good in the air. He needs to be kept away from having those opportunities close to the goal.. So defend that bit higher to negate his threat.

3. Don’t get dragged into a battle. This was our problem last week against Fleetwood. 20 minutes of great football stopped when Fleetwood became ‘industrial’ in their game plan and we struggled to cope with it. Our team isn’t full of big physical players so we need to keep out of such battles. Keep to our tactics as that will work far better for us.
