Following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat away at Cambridge United in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learnt from the match.

Here’s what Chimpimp said:

1. The manager agrees with the majority of fans on areas where improvement needs to be made. Fans have been saying for some time that right back is a weak area, so far this season. They have also identified midfield as an area where more experience and physicality was needed.

Only this week have the club managed to secure Matty Virtue and get Joe Walsh fit to play. Although not yet properly introduced to the team’s methods and not yet ready to play a full 90 minutes, respectively, those 2 players were on within 45 minutes of the game against Cambridge and Regan Poole filling the right-back berth.

Looks like the fans and Mark Kennedy agree on defence and midfield.

2. Many were calling for another striker before last week. Then this week the club loaned one out – Charlie Kendall and then sold Anthony Scully. We didn’t score yesterday. Ipso facto – we are 3 forwards short.

Although Cambridge looked capable of scoring goals without having any new players in their forward line.

Perhaps it’s not just a quantity issue. If Hopper, Diamond, Garrick, Mandroiu and co turn out to be the right players, the number of forwards now in the squad will be the right number. Cambridge fans appeared happy with the ones they have.

3. Cambridge are a decent side. 4 home wins and into the top six with a settled side, looking much like the side they had last season. They didn’t create lots of chances but took the 2 best chances they had with relative ease and looked fairly comfortable thereafter.

Lincoln huffed and puffed but looked anything but a settled side… probably because they aren’t.

The hope though is for a good run of availability of their best players now. It seems a pipedream after last season but would give a good base for an upturn in form, or more precisely a couple of wins rather than plenty of draws and odd loss.
