Following the 3-0 defeat away at Bolton Wanderers in League One yesterday afternoon, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learnt from the match. You can vote for your Man of The Match at the bottom of the page!

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. There will be bumps on the road this season. I think that the majority of supporters are pretty happy with the standard of players bought to the club during the summer. At this point in time every one is a permanent signing, which shows that the club is looking to plan for not only the here and now, but also seasons moving forward. However teams need a little bit of time to gel and get that fluidity and understanding. There was the occasional glimpse of this yesterday against a team who should be up at the top most of the season, but there are still rough edges which need ironing out and this will take some time.

2. We are short of numbers in defensive positions and there is still a large Regan Poole sized hole that needs to be filled. Discounting Lewis Montsma from the numbers as he is unlikely to feature for some time, we have essentially 4 central defenders in the squad, a left wing back who has an injury, a young and relatively untested right back (Benn) and a converted right wing back as our defensive options. That isn’t enough. We all know that Adam Jackson needs game time management and him playing throughout the season Saturday then Tuesday just won’t happen. If we are to persist with the 3/5 at the back with wing backs, and I do think this is a formation that will bring us success, we need extra players in those roles before the transfer window closes.

3. There will be some long old games this season. I think our match had something like 15 minutes in total injury time added. This time last season I suspect that would have been closer to 5 in total for both halves as there didn’t seem to be any lengthy stoppages. As a paying customer I get that they want the games to be less fragmented and you will therefore get more ‘value for money’ by the actual playing time being increased. I am thankful that I drive to matches as this won’t affect me but some supporters will have to keep a very close eye on train times I suspect. Will it stop the mass migration to get some watered down warm beer forty minutes into the first half at Sincil Bank knowing that you could be missing out on a good fifteen minutes of the match?? Doubtful looking at those who make that choice game after game.

Thank you to Graham Burrell and Lincoln City Football Club for the photograph!
