1. Who holds the club record for goals scored in the Conference/National League?

a) Ben Tomlinson
b) Matt Rhead
c) Alan Power
d) Phil Brown

Matt Rhead, with 34. He overtook Ben Tomlinson’s previous record of 32 when he headed City’s second goal in the 2-0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge in front of the BT Sport cameras on 3 April 2017. The goal is also notable for being City’s 100th league and cup goal of an incredible season.

Power finished with a very respectable 27, while Brown totalled 16 in his solitary season in the Conference in 1987-88.

2. Which of City’s opponents in 1987-88 was owned by a London gangster?

a) Barnet
b) Welling United
c) Fisher Athletic
d) Enfield

Fisher Athletic, which was owned (and managed) by gangland boss Dogan Arif. Notorious for its involvement in drug smuggling, armed robbery, murder and racketeering among lots of other things, the Arif family syndicate has been active since the late 1960s and is still believed to be the largest in Britain despite various members of the Arif family being jailed for long spells at various times. Dogan’s ownership of Fisher ended when he was jailed for nine years in 1989 for his involvement in an £8m drug smuggling deal, a sentence later reduced to three years on appeal.

Interestingly, Fisher Athletic later denied any knowledge of the source of Arif’s money. You had to watch out for low flying pigs in the docklands in those days.

3. When City finished an outstanding second in the Football League North (First Championship) in 1941-42, which team were champions?

a) Manchester United
b) Blackpool
c) Everton
d) Preston North End

Blackpool, and only on goal average. Mind you, they scored goals for fun, courtesy of a certain Jock Dodds. Blackpool’s season included a 10-1 win over Southport, 9-1 over Halifax, and 9-0 over Burnley.

City went into the final game at home to Mansfield two points behind Blackpool and needing a miracle in terms of goal difference to overtake them for the title. City’s largest wartime crowd of 6,014 saw them win 6-0 with four from prolific striker Bert Knott, but it was nowhere near enough; despite surprisingly losing 1-0 at home to Rochdale, Blackpool were champions.

The league table finished:

4. What was notable about the two goalkeepers in the Fourth Division game between Lincoln and Bury on 6 December 1980?

a) They were both sent off
b) They were both carried off
c) They both had the same name
d) They both became Welsh internationals

The two goalkeepers – Lincoln’s David Felgate and Bury’s Neville Southall – were both capped by Wales within three years. Furthermore, they both appeared in the same international: Felgate famously won his single cap as a second-half substitute for Southall in the 5-0 friendly win over Romania on 12 October 1983. After just the one season with Bury, Southall moved to Everton in the summer of 1981 for £150,000. He won his first cap in May 1982 and went on to win 92, which many believe prevented Felgate from winning more.

5. Which club record is held by George Shipley?

a) Record scorer in the League Cup
b) Most consecutive Football League appearances
c) Record scorer in the Football League Trophy
d) Most appearances in the FA Cup

Shipley is the club’s record scorer in the League Cup, with 8 goals from his 22 appearances. Phil Hubbard and Tony Cunningham are in joint second place with 6 each.

6. Which ambitious non-league club was reported to have made an approach for Danny Cowley as City closed in on the National League title in April 2017?

a) Forest Green Rovers
b) Billericay Town
c) AFC Fylde
d) Salford City

It was Billericay Town, newly acquired by steel magnate and Essex wide boy Glenn Tamplin. He had also tried to buy Dagenham & Redbridge earlier in the season.

7. What was notable about the majority of City’s midweek games prior to the Second World War?

a) They were played on Mondays
b) They kicked off at midday
c) They were against Grimsby Town
d) They were played behind closed doors

They were played mainly on Mondays. It appeared to be down to preference: while City played mainly on Mondays, Southport preferred Tuesdays, Darlington Wednesdays and so on. The number of midweek games was relatively low because not so many matches were played overall – 46 league games in a season did not become the norm until 1950, and many inter-war seasons consisted of either 38 or 42. In addition, there was only one cup competition – the FA Cup. The majority of midweek matches took place in September while the weather was conducive, with April taking care of winter postponements.

8. What are Evan Jenkins, Jimmy Hutchinson, Johnny Garvie, Alan Morton, Gordon Hobson, John Thomas, Tony Lormor and Vadaine Oliver the only Lincoln City players to have done?

a) Score a hat-trick on the opening day of the season
b) Score a hat-trick in their final game for the club
c) Score a hat-trick on the final day of the season
d) Score a hat-trick in one half of a game

They all scored a hat-trick on the final day of the season, and there is something notable about all eight of them.

Welsh winger Jenkins was the first player to achieve the feat, in a 5-3 win over New Brighton at Sincil Bank on 26 April 1930. It was his final game for Lincoln before a big money move to Burnley, just relegated from the First Division; after 16 goals in 66 league games at Turf Moor, he returned to SB for a further season in 1933-34.

Hutchinson notably scored his in the title-winning 5-0 victory over Hartlepools United on 1 May 1948 in front of a new record attendance of 20,024.

Garvie is the only player to do it in a Second Division match, a 4-2 win over Fulham on 24 April 1954.

Morton was the first to do it in the Fourth Division, scoring all three in a 3-0 win over Barrow on 29 April 1964.

Hobson is the only player to do it away from home in a Football League match, in a 5-2 win at Torquay United on 3 May 1980.

Hobson’s future strike partner John Thomas scored all three as City edged past Port Vale 3-2 on 12 May 1984, but could only score four more in the rest of his Lincoln City career.

Lormor is the only player in the club’s history to score four on the final day, which he did in a 6-2 demolition of Carlisle United on 11 May 1991.

Oliver is the only player to do it in the Conference, with three second-half goals in the 5-1 relegation battle at Hyde on 20 April 2013; it also proved to be his final game for the club before his transfer to Crewe.

9. In which year was Lincoln City Football Club formed?

a) 1881
b) 1882
c) 1883
d) 1884

The club officially came into being on 26 June 1884, although interestingly the club got it wrong by celebrating its centenary a year early in 1982-83. Despite being advised to the contrary, chairman Gilbert Blades insisted he was right and ploughed on ahead.

10. And a quirky one to finish with. Why did Loxley, Linnecor and Graver turn out regularly for the Northern Intermediate League side (the youth team) in 1976-77?

a) Lincoln thought the experience of their former stars would benefit the younger players
b) Lincoln thought their presence would boost attendances for youth matches
c) They were the sons of Bert Loxley, Bert Linnecor and Andy Graver
d) The three players coincidentally had the same surnames as their famous forebears

They were the sons of their famous fathers – it just so happened that Tony Loxley, Mark Linnecor and Dale Graver were on the club’s books at the same time. Tony Loxley was the only one of the three to appear for City’s first team, his solitary game for the club coming as deputy for the injured Terry Cooper in a 6-0 hiding at Swindon on 3 March 1979. It proved to be the only Football League appearance of his career.
