Uncanny, isn’t it? Wigan have all the hallmarks of being next season’s Bolton, Christ knows what their squad will look like when the season kicks off. Another team of teenagers, perhaps? Charlton are under a transfer embargo with ownership problems, possibly next season’s Bury with the same lawyer involved with both.
The saving grace for Wigan could be reducing the debt enough to find a buyer; they could then build a decent squad for next season because the transfer window remains open until 16 October. A lot depends on how many players they sell in the interim: Antonee Robinson looks set to be the next to go, for £1.5 million or thereabouts. He almost moved to Milan for £10 million in January before the transfer fell through due to a medical condition. Had that sale gone through, they would have survived without administration.
I am currently researching our Season Preview, and there are so many stories to tell. Sunderland are up for sale, Swindon are tied up in knots, Gillingham claim to have the smallest budget in League One, Hull are a rancorous mess, AFC Wimbledon have massive financial commitments, Rochdale are losing £125,000 per month, Burton are putting most of their players on one-year deals (including Eardley and Bostwick), and many more.
It is interesting seeing so many Vital members entering the Where Will They Finish? competition. With a few exceptions, hardly anyone has made any signings, and some clubs have no more than a dozen players at the moment. As highlighted, there are some time bombs set to go off at various stages. Even with the information I have collected on each club, I can honestly say that I have not the slightest idea how the season is likely to pan out for each one.
