How Long Have You Supported Luton Town?
Just about 40 years, started with a 7-1 win against Cardiff and haven’t looked back since.
Last Season’s League Finish?
That was a heartbreaker. The play-offs were incredible last year, amazing games but Blackpool held their nerve and we just didn’t quite have the quality. In the end I think that losing play-off semi-finalists was about right given performances over the season.
What Do You Think Of Your Manager?
He’s a very exciting prospect who likes to play entertaining football. Personally I’m much happier with us going for someone like him than any kind of “steady hand”. He’s a bit of a nutter and a passionate man so he can go OTT at times. If he can manage that and use his obvious intelligence and diligence he could go far.
Hopes/Expectations This Season?
At the start of the season I expected us to challenge strongly. Despite what I hope was a “Hiccup” at Port Vale yesterday what has happened so far has been incredible. From that I think we have to be looking upwards but Carlisle last year probably thought along similar lines. I think we’ll get promoted.
One(s) To Watch?
Hard to pick one, we are scoring from all over the pitch so I’ll pick three.
Danny Hilton, he’s an utter ******* on the pitch but he’s our utter ******* and we love him, not on top form at the moment but a pain in the rear to all who face him in all kinds of ways. A player opposition fans hate but trust me, you’d want him on your team. Really decent guy off the pitch too.
Luke Berry, work rate, quality and an eye for goal, top quality midfielder in this division.
Alan Sheehan, quality set piece delivery with as cultured a left foot as you will see on a central defender in this division.
Top Seven Predictions?
Best guess: Luton Town, Notts County, Coventry City, Exeter City, Lincoln City, Colchester United and Wycombe Wanderers.
Bottom Two Predictions?
Morecambe and Forest Green Rovers.
Thoughts on Lincoln City?
I was at the 0-0 back at the start of September. It was definitely one of the most hard-fought games I’ve seen this year. The impression I got of Lincoln was that you were very tough physically but that it would be a mistake to write you off as just being that. You clearly have some decent technical footballers too and it was a very even game. I’m really not surprised to see you edging your way into real contention and despite my guess at the top seven above if you can keep that team fit anything is possible in such a tight league.
Off the pitch though what the hell has happened up there? Big crowds and while you do commit the cardinal sin of allowing drummers into the ground without inserting their drumsticks where the sun doesn’t shine the backing for the team was frankly outstanding. It’s as good as anything I’ve seen in terms of noise per person. It must be immense for the players to have that kind of support.
Anything could happen with our lot and we will want to respond to yesterday’s crash at Port Vale but with the form you are in I’ll go for 1-1.
Random Fact About Your Club?
The oldest professional club in the South.
What are your proudest and most embarrassing moments as a Luton Town Supporter?
In both categories there are many to choose from…
Proudest: Seeing David Pleat dance across the Maine Road turf in a game where we won with a late goal to both keep us up and send Man City down.
Embarrassing: Well I’ve often said that until you’ve seen your team lose at Braintree you haven’t suffered but for me it will always be when our idiot board at the time sacked our manager Jimmy Ryan who had somehow kept us in the top flight on a shoestring. He went on to run the youth system at Man United spending some time as Alex Ferguson’s assistant manager yet somehow he wasn’t good enough for Luton!
Do you have a Supporters Trust and what role do they play at the Club?
Yes, they are extremely active. On top of that the current board is made up of ex-supporters and players etc. Never have I been so happy about the people in charge of our club in all that time watching them. They have transformed almost everything about the club, all in positive ways.
Which was your favourite match involving Luton Town?
So many again but alongside that one at Maine Road obviously the 1988 League Cup Final win over Arsenal. Their sponsors had an advert saying “JVC – the best thing you’ve heard since getting Luton in the final”, Our sponsor suggested that “As arsenal will find out Luton also have some classy performers”. 2-1 down, conceded a dodgy penalty but ended up winning 3-2 with a last minute goal. “And Luton are ahead in the very last minute” goes the commentary, you can’t really beat a day like that.
Which was your least favourite match involving Luton Town?
Braintree, how many times do I have to say it? Though yesterday’s at Port Vale wasn’t a whole lot better.
Any viable plans for a new ground? (Hopefully motorway junction sites and places like Dunstable are no longer on the menu!)
Oh yes! Power Court, just google “2020 developments”. It looks just about perfect for us, nicely in the town centre and a fantastic modern design without being one of these awful new “soulless bowls”. Unfortunately it’s being objected to by an awful national company who worry it will hit the profits they make out of the current town shopping centre so planning is dragging on. They really are a drain on the town and are objecting to a development that would transform that part of the town from derelict to frankly fabulous.
Do you need a holding midfielder? Your rumoured to be about to make a cheap 250k bid for our midfielder Alex Woodyard!
Our manager has said he doesn’t expect much to happen in January and we are reasonably stocked in midfield areas. However, one of our holding midfielders has been crocked for a long time and while the young players we have are generally doing a great job I can imagine us maybe wanting to bolster that position. On the other hand I think most Town fans think a commanding centre half is the most needed January signing.
Nathan Jones general demeanour comes across as a bit arrogant and cocky. Is that something Luton fans notice?
Lol, that sounds like guff to me to be honest. And as you can probably imagine though you’ll have to ask someone who cares what other fans think about him, given the job that Jones is currently doing for us we love him and he seems genuinely passionate about how we want the club to move forwards.
He also seems to come out with lots of excuses if you’ve not won. Bobbly pitch seems to be his favourite.
Hmmm, football manager makes excuses…name one that doesn’t. You should hear some of the drivel that opposition managers have come up with after losing to us. Anyone who genuinely thinks this about Jones though should listen to his interview after yesterday’s defeat at Port Vale. Funnily enough he does mention their pitch, which was genuinely poor, but he’s quite categoric “They were better than us all over the pitch”, “Give them credit they fully deserved it” and so on. We’ve put seven and eight past teams without the opposition managers giving us anything like as much credit. Preferring to drone on about how much we’ve spent on players not realising that our net transfer spending this year is probably the lowest in the league…
Nathan Jones was a bit left field of an appointment to many but is doing well. How did he get the attention of the Luton board and what are his qualities?
I think he was one of the applicants and received huge endorsement from his previous club Brighton and was known amongst one or two of the senior coaching staff and ex-players on the board. Passionate is the first quality I’d mention and his future success will rely on him channelling that in the right way. However, he’s also very diligent and thorough in all that he does and I believe the whole club will benefit from the things that he is helping put in place for years to come. His celebrations after a good result are becoming the stuff of legend, like I said he’s a nutter but he’s our nutter and we love him!
