The last time The Imps met tonight’s opponents Crewe Alexandra (managed by David Artell) at Gresty Road was on Saturday 5th September 2020, in the First Round of the League Cup. The Imps won 2-1 that afternoon. Tom Hopper gave City the lead in the 52nd minute from inside the six-yard box after a dangerous low ball in by Anthony Scully, Billy Sass-Davies made it 1-1 just 3 minutes later, then Lewis Montsma popped up with a beautiful volley from a Jorge Grant corner in the 66th minute to secure the victory.

Ahead of tonight’s match, we have done a Q&A with two Crewe Alexandra supporters, so thank you to Steven and Ryan for answering our questions. The answers have been published on two pages. First up, the answers provided by Steven:

How long have you supported Crewe Alexandra?

Since 2003/4, so approaching 16 and a half years. My first game was a 1-0 defeat at home against Telford in the FA Cup, three leagues below us at the time. It’s amazing I ever went back.

Where did you finish last season?

Second in League Two on PPG – but top when the season actually concluded. Personally speaking, I think we’d have gone on to win it but all ifs and buts.

What do you think of your Manager?

Excellent Manager and an even better man. Someone who understands what we’re about, is a fan himself and works harder than anyone could ask for. Very lucky to have him.

Who Are The League One Managers? No.7: David Artell (Crewe Alexandra)

What are your hopes and expectations for the 2020/21 season?

This team could finish anywhere and that’s a realistic comment. I’d take a mid-table finish if offered but I wouldn’t be surprised to see us finish even higher at all.

One(s) to watch?

There’s 7/8 that’ll easily have good careers and be worth a decent fee at some point. If the COVID situation was different there’s a good chance we’d have lost our captain Perry NG (your former gaffer being a big fan), Ryan Wintle and Charlie Kirk. Harry Pickering is another from left-back – and I’m sure Luke Offord, Tommy Lowery, Will Jaaskelainen, and Callum Ainley will all have good careers.

Which teams you think will finish in the top six in League One?

Haven’t seen everyone yet but both yourselves and Charlton looked strong when we played both. Sunderland and Ipswich you expect to be up there and I expect Peterborough to be up there. The other spot up for grabs.

Which teams do you think will finish in the bottom four in League One?

Tough one again, it’s a very open league. MK Don’s looked a little behind and so did Wigan as a surprise package – but very early to judge.

What are your thoughts on Lincoln City?

Very impressed with the way they rebuilt in the conference and gone from strength to strength. It’s also a very enjoyable place to go as a visiting fan. A lot of effort is made and it’s refreshing.

What do you think the score will be?

We’re capable of anything and a stronger side than the cup game six or seven weeks ago, but Lincoln on a great run and will make it tough. Going for a 1-1 draw which I think both would be happy with.

Random fact about your Club?

We once played in a game where a player had his leg broken by a dog running on the pitch!

If you could steal one Lincoln City player for your own team, who would
it be and why?

Jorge Grant. Always played well against us and forged a good career for himself in the lower leagues.

What are your proudest and most embarrassing moments as a Crewe Alexandra Supporter?

Proudest – fielding two all homegrown XI’s in a league fixture. Brilliant effort by anyone, especially a club of our size, and a testament to all the staff behind the scenes for making it happen over the years.

Not necessarily embarrassing, but the sex abuse scandal had been by far the saddest and hurtful part.

Who would you say is your most underrated player?

Underrated – I’d go Luke Offord. Not many people will know about him. He’s only played 20 games but looks like a seasoned pro at Centre Back. I expect him to have a very good career.

Do you have a Supporters Trust and what role do they play at the Club?

We have The Railwaymen Supporters Society who have played a massive part over the last two years. They managed to raise more than £250,000 to buy a stake in the club last year and keep us owned by the community. A group of volunteers that went above and beyond and probably not got the credit they deserve.

Which was your favourite match involving Crewe Alexandra?

Crewe 3-0 Sunderland, around the time I started going in the Championship. I was too young to realise how much we were punching above our weight at the time by what a result.

Beating Stoke 2-0 in the same season also gets a mention for local reasons.

Which was your least favourite match involving Crewe Alexandra?

Doncaster 3-2 Crewe in the semi-final of the JPT, 2007. Finished 6-5 on aggregate.

We were 2-0 up at half time and dreaming of Wembley before the second half took it away from us. Horrible night and one we can’t forget.

Do you have a Former Players Association at Crewe Alexandra?

Our Supporters Society, as mentioned above, have created something along those lines. A lot of our old players started here and always seem to want to give something back and take the chance to do things like that. It’s great from a supporters point of view.

What is the best thing about Crewe?

History. A town built on the railway and the works.
