Following Saturday’s 5-1 win at home against Burton Albion in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learned from the match.

You can discuss what has been said in this article HERE, as well as many other topics on our 100% Imps forum! We have also published a Lincoln City v Burton Albion Quiz, which can be found just below the first three things. Every page view helps raise money for Lincoln City Football Club!

Here’s what HitherImp said:

1. On our day, we can make any side in this division look ordinary with the skills and teamwork developed under Appleton. For a young side, the maturity, positional awareness and decision making are really quite surprising and they’ll only get better.

2. We can hit the target if we want to! Looks like the shot-shy days of the early part of the season are long gone: we’ve had some screamers go in this season and the lads are lining up to have a pop from some distance out. Being able to score from in the box and also from range is giving opposing defenders nightmares.

3. Loving the build-up play and skilful ball handling as we come out from the back. We now have players well capable of carrying out this strategy and who love nothing more than to run on the ball, this has revitalised the team. Add some extraordinary cross-field and long-distance balls from the back five (Palmer doing his bit too!) and I think we are beginning to dream the previously unthinkable.

How many clubs from Burton have played in the Football League?

And here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. We can trust the long term plan. When the retained list was announced in the summer there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth over the release of Eardley and Bostwick but today showed why that decision was spot on. Accepting for the fact that Burton are now well below our standard, neither of those heroes would make our starting line up this season. Their role in our climb up the leagues can never be underestimated but we have significantly upgraded. So to both, we can say thank you for everything you did in the past, but moving forward and upward we wish you the best elsewhere.

2. We can trust the players. We have a young team who have been told by the management how he wants them to play, and they can play in that manner. Now today there was a communication error which cost us a soft goal. Our last home game the playing out from the back tactic cost us the game. This time last season mistakes like that in front of a full house would have led to many grumbles from the crowd swiftly followed by shouts of ‘Get the f*****n thing forward’ ‘Give it some welly’. The reality is that our team is much better than that and will keep playing the right way irrespective of the occasional lapse. I actually believe that this young team has had the opportunity to develop quicker without the added pressure of a big crowd. Should we be allowed back into the cathedral of football before the end of this season I hope that the supporters appreciate that this team does know what it is doing and not resort to ‘stop f*****n about with it’ shouts two minutes into our first home game back in.

3. We are top of League One at New Year. Blimey
