Following last night’s 4-1 win away at Shrewsbury Town in the Second Round of the EFL Trophy, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what Chesterimp said:

1. Most Imps squads in the past have one or more players who are ballast; you see their name on the team sheet and think ‘ah, rough night ahead’. The squad players tonight were all bang on message and fitted seamlessly into the playing style to deliver one of the finest performances of a season of fine performances. None are ballast, all are capable of starting with confidence.

2. Elbouzedi can only have been frustrated with the amount of game time he’s had since he first appeared for the Imps 11 months ago, I think on the same pitch as tonight? Improved physical strength allied to speed and control and Zach delivered a man-of-the-match performance. Starter or ‘finisher’, he’ll hopefully be heavily involved for the rest of the season.

3. This was a fine advert for MA’s Finishing School for Premiership Players. Johnson (ok, Championship but he’ll move up), needing to add maturity and decision making to his speed and raw talent, displayed all of that in an unfamiliar midfield role, the tackle, run and pass for goal 3 the highlight. Gotts didn’t look a right-back when he first joined but did tonight, with some style. Eyoma continues to impress as either right-back or centre back, unshowy but very capable.
