Ahead of tonight’s match at home against Manchester United U21s in the EFL Trophy, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.

Here’s what one our of members said:

1. Support our team whatever happens. Sam Long is having his first game for the full team, but it’s not just him. After a couple of disappointing results, we need to accept that we are in transition, especially as the window is not yet closed and injuries have hit us hard. If we are losing, we fans need to keep on clapping, etc. Was it Oxford who beat us 6-0 at home, but we kept singing? That’s us at our best.

2. I know it’s hard spending our hard-earned money on a ticket then watching things go wrong, but that’s life caring about a club like ours. The last few years shouldn’t make us blind to the fact that supporting a club like ours isn’t likely to bring endless joy in victory.

“Support” Manchester United or similar like the numerous kids who may well be squeezing their support for our opponents tonight if that’s your aspiration.

3. Patience. I’ll never forget the anguish and frustration on Cian Bolger’s face as hundreds of City fans shouted at him as the poor fellow tried to play it out from the back. Our opponents tonight may pressurise and press us hard, we all just need to accept that we don’t have the intention of thumping it upfield to the head of a new old-fashioned number 9 and it wouldn’t work without a Matt Rhead or similar anyway.
