Ahead of Saturday’s match away at Northampton Town in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. Get on the front foot from the kick-off. This month has shown the very good, bad and ugly of us. When you consider those games the two best performances have been the away wins at Rochdale and Shrewsbury. The significance of those matches (other than them being away games) is how we started those matches. In both games, we were at it from the kick-off. We took an immediate grip of both games and didn’t allow the opposition the chance to settle into their style of play. The last two home games we have tried to work up a head of steam late on, when behind and it can be difficult. Start on the front foot with energy and put the opposition under the cosh from the very first minute and they will buckle.

2. Score first. We managed a dogged win against Wigan when we went behind but on the whole, if we concede first, we lose. Confidence is a key thing for young players, and we have lots of them who have to work things out for themselves without too many experienced heads to guide them. Get that first goal and Northampton, who shipped four at Oxford in their last game, will struggle to get back into it. We are pretty good at defending leads.

3. Try your luck. I think most on here wouldn’t mind if players had the occasional pop at goal even if it ends up on occasions in the car park, rather than have those extra 3 or 4 passes trying to unlock a very tight defence. Sometimes you get that fortunate deflection that takes it in, or the opposition keeper spills it for a tap in. But if you don’t chance your arm, those little bits of fortune don’t happen. Have a pop.
