The Imps lost 2-1 away at Oldham Athletic today in a pre-season friendly. Conor McAleny put the hosts ahead in the first half and Anthony Scully made it 1-1 early in the second half. David Keillor-Dunn made it 2-1 to the hosts against the run of play with seven minutes left on the clock. Below you will find views from hulloutpost:

“Looking a bit undercooked at the moment and I’ve no idea what the starting 11 is going to be or what positions some of the players will be in. Fortunately, I’m sure Michael Appleton does and will.

We look vulnerable to the counter and has been said the balls in from wide positions were consistently poor. On the plus side, there is some decent passing at a good tempo and that style is only likely to get better the more it is repeated and the players get up to speed. Also, we aren’t currently looking like rabbits in the headlights when playing out from the back.”

NorfolkImp: “A disappointing result, especially as they scored with probably their only 2 efforts on goal …. 3 games and 2 defeats against 4th Tier sides, not sure what to think overall, although technically it’s pleasing at times.”

simes69: “Very poor last 15 minutes from us. I had Oldham down as L2 relegation fodder, but to be fair they looked better than Salford.

We had loads of possession and often looked very good, but there was no end product. The final ball in was poor, but when it did get put in there didn’t seem to be anyone there. Definitely a work in progress. Unfortunately, we aren’t ready for the new season in my honest opinion, and need another 2-3 friendlies against L1/2 opposition.”

WellingtonImp: “Results in these games matter not. Looking at this game, Oldham seemed to be further along their pre-season than us. The two stand outs for me were that the spine seems lightweight (hopefully incoming players will help here) and delivery from wide needs to be better. We will pick up a lot more loose balls once fitter and that was the difference today.”

Luke Imp: “It’s one of those styles that will evolve but initially it’ll take a while to work, certainly longer than other approaches.

Just needs a little bit more of something in the final third, particularly a runner in behind. Hopper and Scully are happy to drop deep but neither will stretch a defence too often (I know Hopper did against Scunthorpe but their defence went missing).

I thought Grant did ok in CM but I’d rather him higher up the pitch. An Edun and especially Bridcutt will have probably held the midfield together more from a counter-attack point of view.

Very poor delivery from wide areas today, though. Lewis did ok but Zak, Anderson, Bradley and Melbourne’s were all generally terrible.”
