Ahead of Saturday’s match away at Crewe Alexandra in the First Round of the Carabao Cup, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to make it through to the Second Round.
Here’s what sedgleyimp said:
1. Have confidence in the plan. The pre-season matches have shown the way that Michael Appleton wants this team to play football. Playing out from the back will be the norm for this season and the players need to have confidence in his vision and their abilities to get it right. Practice will make perfect. Players are going to have to be comfortable in all areas of the pitch. Saturday’s match at Oldham saw Melbourne moving from left-back into central midfield on occasions, Walsh bringing the ball forward well beyond the halfway line and Hopper and Scully running back into defensive positions. Players need to know the plan and keep to it.
2. Be clinical. We have plenty of goalscoring potential, but chances may be few and far between and when they arrive they need to be taken. It appears that Crewe have played far more minutes than us in preparation for the re-start so should be more match fit than us, and have that bit of fluidity which comes with playing together. They will also be still on a high from getting promoted only a few weeks ago. So we might spend a lot of time conceding them possession and playing on the counter-attack. As such we need to make sure that when that real chance arrives, the net bulges.
3. Penalty practice. I assume that as per last season this match will go straight to penalties if drawn at 90 minutes. That is a distinct possibility, so get some practice in before Saturday. It might give us that little extra edge.
