Following the 1-0 win away at Stevenage yesterday in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learnt from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said (view what West Sussex Imp said here):

1. You get 3 points for a 5-star 6-0 romp and you get 3 points for a scruffy 1-0 win. The match at Stevenage won’t live long in the memory but they say that the very best teams manage to get wins in games where they don’t play that well and that was the net result of this match. Passes went astray. Very few chances were actually made by either side. A game where the ball was actually in play for I’d suggest less than a third of the game time, yet you look at the league table and we show ourselves with a 100% record away from home and sitting very nicely in fourth. It’s these types of wins that often make the difference between a very good season or a missed opportunity come the end of each April. In the toilets at the end of the match, I overheard someone say we’d had better matches to watch under Gary Simpson than this one. Well, the big difference is that we’d be lamenting a 3-0 loss rather than a hard-won 3 points.

2. I do like the passion some of our players have for the club, but sometimes they have to be very wary of stepping over that line, especially when we have a referee as we had today who was liable to make some curious decisions. You only have to have a look at that late red card for Paudie O’Connor to see that unnecessary cards and suspensions could cause us some issues as the season progresses. He, House and Erhahon are all likely to sit out a few games this season due to yellow cards. I honestly don’t think they’d lose anything out of their games if they cut out some of those given for getting involved off the ball or back chatting, and these are the ones that really need to be cut out of individual’s games.

3. Our 3rd shirt is NOT a football shirt. We took the field today in a shirt which looked exactly what it was. A £2 T-shirt which could easily have been given to our players by Stevenage because Terry had left the kit at home or we’d travelled in the (very nice) white reserve shirt and the referee had decided there was a clash of kits. A bit of a rare mis-step in our recent kits and I hope we don’t have to see it that often.
