Shrewsbury Town 2-2 Lincoln City (4-2): Match Stats & Views From The Forum

|

Views from cherryexile following Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw away at Shrewsbury Town in the First Round of the League Cup, which The Imps lost 4-2 on penalties: “We lost and slipped from a two-goal lead but there were lots of positives and I really enjoyed the game. Some of that was just being in a stadium again. I didn’t realise how much I had missed the smell of the toilets, the unhelpful stewards, the extortionate parking costs, the walk to the stadium, the horrible coffee, and the abuse from the opposition fans. All of that built into the jumping up from my perfect viewpoint as Bramall crossed for Hopper to head home in front of the fans and the joy and admiration on the faces around me as Bishop struck home his first goal for the Imps.

Melbourne was solid but for one misplaced pass in the first half and one missed tackle in the second half. The only complaint was that he looked a little too left-footed. For me he has done enough to stay with us until at least Christmas and I wouldn’t be perturbed to see him given another year on his contract.

Scully was at his best, creating space, turning his marker, dummying, and playing little passes in behind; shame he left his shooting boots in the changing room. One dummy in the first half to leave the ball for Andelukan was clearly worked on in training and worked really well – shades of Arsenal at their best.

Bramall was a different player to the one from last year. Solid defensively and a real threat going forward.

Andelukan was an octave off. The same tune just not quite the same arrangement. He looked like he needs a couple more games to harmonise. A few balls a little off the pace and runs not quite there but he looked like a right-sided Morgan Rogers with one step-over routine into the penalty area, he worked hard and made interceptions, and had the strength to bundle opponents off the ball. There is a lot more to come from him.

Griffiths is a very good 19-year-old. One terrific close-range save (at the opposite end from us) and another diving into the corner in the first half. Distribution is reasonable and solid but needs work to be as good as Palmer. He will improve into the season and I wouldn’t be surprised if he bulked up a little too under Map’s tutorage.

Final call out to Bishop who was excellent. He took a little while to grow into the game. His ability to turn and run in the middle opened up opportunities four or five times. He tackled well and his link-up play was good. One change of speed to break into space bodes well for what he will be able to do once he gets to full match fitness. If we keep this boy fit for the season we will be right up there and have a real asset on our hands. I wasn’t sure about him from what I read before we signed him, but I am a convert on this performance alone.

I can’t help it, I just love football and it was a much better night than just the result.”

More views from our Match Thread:

Impish: “That’s disappointing after such a commanding lead and what sounded like a decent performance. Really need to get the strength in depth sorted defensively and some help for Hopper up top.”

imps_joe: “I do not like penalties.

Sounded like we played some good football though despite being a weakened team. Really just need to make sure we don’t take our foot off the gas when we’re on top. We always seem to go in our shell after going ahead. Disappointing to go out and miss out on the money considering the good position we were in.

Happy to miss out though if the team learns for the next game.

As others have said, really need additions at CH.

Onwards and upwards.”

Scotimp: “Not at all bothered at losing that. We played 61 games last season, and it showed in the latter stages. That was half a dozen too many in such a compacted season and our league form will be better for not playing so many this time around. I’m sorry if that sounds negative to some people, but it really is not – I would rather have promotion than a second-round League Cup tie away to Bournemouth.”
