The last time The Imps played Saturday’s opponents Shrewsbury Town, it is safe to say it was a pretty boring match which ended 0-0 at Sincil Bank, in front of a crowd of 8,710. Cian Bolger was shown a straight red card for a foul on Shrews substitute Shaun Whalley near the halfway line with just 10 minutes of the match to go.

Prior to that, the previous meeting was at Wembley in April 2018, the day The Imps won the Checkatrade Trophy, with Elliott Whitehouse scoring the only goal of the match in the 16th minute, in front of a crowd of 41,261, which included around 27,000 Lincoln City supporters.

Time for the Q&A. Thank you to Shrewsbury Town supporter Paul for answering our questions!

How long have you supported Shrewsbury Town?

Since 1987. My father worked as a cameraman for the club and I tagged along aged 8. I’ve been hooked ever since.

Where did you finish last season?

18th.

What do you think of your Manager?

Sam Ricketts has been a breath of fresh air in many ways considering how he has made us hard to beat and brought in solid defenders like Aaron Pierre and Ebanks-Landell. The question marks are generally about his tactics and occasional reluctantly to go at teams in fear of losing, he’s definitely a ‘respect the point’ type of gaffer, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Yes

No

No

What are your hopes and expectations for the 2019/20 season?

If we strengthen in this transfer window with good striking options and wingers and a shape that allows us to score more then why not a shout at the playoffs. If he’s more cautious in signings etc then mid-table.

One(s) to watch?

Shaun Whalley is always our main attacking outlet, but Josh Laurent is one who is having an excellent season so far and rightly getting the plaudits.

Which teams you think will finish in the top six?

Portsmouth, Ipswich Town, Wycombe Wanderers, Rotherham United, Coventry City & Shrewsbury Town.

Which teams do you think will finish in the bottom three?

Southend United, Milton Keynes Dons & Tranmere Rovers.

What are your thoughts on Lincoln City?

Good team who like to play football the right way, have some dangerous players like Tyler Walker & Jorge Grant.

What do you think the score will be?

1-1.

Will The Imps win, lose or draw against Shrewsbury Town?

Win

Lose

Draw

Draw

Random fact about your Club?

Harry Shearer (Hollywood actor – spinal tap, Simpson’s) is a Town fan. As was Spielberg’s favourite actor, Pete Postlethwaite.

If you could steal one Lincoln City player for your own team, who would it be and why?

Tyler Walker – we need goals.

What are your proudest and most embarrassing moments as a Shrewsbury Town Supporter?

Proudest would be the promotions and beating Everton in the cup in 2003 but embarrassing was losing to Staines Town at home in the cup. Dark days.

Who would you say is your most underrated player?

Sounds strange but possibly Shaun Whalley….still surprises me and other teams’ fans he never played at a higher level.

Do you have a Supporters Trust and what role do they play at the Club?

Yes, and very heavily. The relationship between club and trust is excellent and spearheaded by our wonderful CEO Brian Caldwell. We now are the only team in EFL with safe standing because of that relationship.

Which was your favourite match involving Shrewsbury Town?

Beating Lincoln 5-2 at Sincil Bank a few years back. Only joking. Bossing the game vs Chelsea in 2015, we lost 2-1 but had them majorly rattled and you had Hazard running the ball in the corner to waste time, tells you everything. They won the Premier League that year.

Which was your least favourite match involving Shrewsbury Town?

As mentioned Staines Town FA Cup or losing to Carlisle to drop out of the Football League, gut-wrenching.

Do you have a Former Players Association at Shrewsbury Town?

Not sure.

What’s the best thing about Shrewsbury?

It’s been voted consistently on the top ten best places to live for about ten years now, very pretty and historic, much like Lincoln.

What were your thoughts on our cup final game two years ago?

Apart from the GBH from Rhead on our keeper, your game plans worked and Shrews couldn’t get around it, in the end, you deserved to win and I like Lincoln and have always enjoyed our games.
