Rotherham United 2-1 Lincoln City: Match Stats & Views From The Forum

|

Views from hulloutpost following the 2-1 defeat away at Rotherham United in League One: “I’m writing this cold so no doubt I’ll be touching on stuff other people have already covered:

What a strange game of football. In the first half, and especially the opening quarter of an hour I would like to say we were chasing shadows except nobody was actually chasing anything. Instead, it appeared to be 11 disorganised strangers who spent 45 minutes looking at each other quizzically with the odd bit of pointing going on.

All the while Rotherham were left to impose their game at will, closing down aggressively in packs of three and left to lump in crosses from all angles and ranges completely unopposed.

The Imps simply wilted under the press but there was no need for the Kayode challenge on Wright. I was 10 yards away and it was an act of pure opportunism from a ****ing coward who deliberately waited until he had got the ball in two hands when the ‘keeper was at his most vulnerable, to put in a very late lunge. ‘You’ can grin all you like Kayode and take the sly congratulations from your team mates but based on that you are simply a yellow piece of shit; you are not a man.

Notwithstanding Wright didn’t get any protection from the ref. who not for the first or last time was hopelessly behind play. I couldn’t decide whether he came into the game needing a hernia op. or hip replacement, but he actually made Huxtable look mobile.

The second half saw the game turned on it’s head, once the Imps worked out Rotherham are just an organised bunch of energised spoilers who are actually quite rubbish at playing football.

Bramall came into his own as an attacking wing-back and he pinged in a succession of fizzing low crosses that were crying out for a finish and finally got one from TH.

Quite how we had that double miss in injury time is beyond me, but I came away from the game having gone from ‘this could be an embarrassing mauling’ in the first half, to ‘how didn’t we get something from the game’.

It was mixed emotions really as we saw the worst (powder puff) and the best (slick meaningful football) from the Imps over the course of the game.

As for Rotherham, I totally get it when MA says their style is successful at this level. In L1 they can rely on bullying sides lacking physical stature or expect opponents to not have the pace or technical skills to retain enough possession and hurt them with the ball. In the Championship they play sides that don’t suffer from those issues and the result is the constant yo yo-ing between the two divisions.”

WellingtonImp: “What a contrast between two halves. The first half could (should?) have seen us 0-4 down. But, different Imps in the second half, and could have taken a point. Well done Imps, fantastic second period. If only we could turn up for a full 90.
Agree with Hone, Bramall MotM.”

PerthImp: “Oh my word – what a second half. Why on earth didn’t they play like that in the first half. I reckon MA must have given them a right roasting at HT. Shame Cullen’s shot was straight at Vickers at the death. Proud of the Imps second half. We’ve taken the top team, who are physically intense and a really tough team to play against, and made them look very ordinary in the second half. Need to play like that every game. Excellent – come on you Imps 👏👏.”

Red Wimp: “Just got in, and after my comments at half time I reverse them for the 2nd half. Gave it a right good go & who would have thunk Rovrum hanging on and kicking it anywhere.

I have to mention the assistant referee nearest to us who probably had the worst performance I can remember seeing.

Wonder what their crowd sound like when they’re struggling (I.e. next season) as they were dead until Warne tried to get them going in stoppage time.”
