The Imps got back to winning ways last night with a thoroughly deserved victory over a Barnet side which began the game poorly but which ended it much stronger, giving us a few heart-stopping moments before the three points were secured. Thus ended a two-game losing run which is the most we have ever had under Danny Cowley’s leadership; I can remember it happening just twice last season.

Two changes were made to the line-up one enforced and one not; Ollie Palmer came in for the suspended Billy Knott and, much more surprisingly, Josh Vickers began his first league game between the sticks. City were exceptionally quick out of the traps, like we witnessed many times earlier on last season, and probably should have scored before Palmer unleashed a right-foot shot into the bottom left of the goal from about 22 yards. City were well in command throughout the half and added a deserved second goal, a wonder strike on the volley from Harry Anderson after good work by both Matty Green and Alex Woodyard. We haven’t score many goals in the first half this season, so to notch two before the interval was quite a rarity but fully warranted, even though Barnet did show what they were made of in the last few minutes of the half.

Half-time: Lincoln City 2 Barnet 0

We all wondered if the Imps could gain their highest win of the season as the second half got under way and I doubt if anyone, other than the 86 Barnet fans and their entourage, had any inkling of what was to happen during the second period. Barnet began to play with style and flair and City seemed unable to cope; it was one of those occasions when you simply knew the opposition would score and they did. A poor defensive header from Rob Dickie (rare, I know) which then hit Sean Raggett and landed at the feet of Shaquille Coulthirst who very deftly flicked the ball up and volleyed home. A tense 29 minutes ensued, although Barnet didn’t really create another clear chance. City might even have extended their lead but for a little more luck and some excellent ‘keeping by Craig Ross who kept out a couple of rasping shots from both Jordan Maguire-Drew and Anderson.

May I finish on a personal note about Clive Kettle? Our referee for the evening had an excellent game and kept it flowing. He was fair to both sides and controlled the game very well. What a refreshing change.

I thought that Vickers had a good first half but looked a little nervous in the second period; I expect he’ll keep his place at Blundell Park, mind. Palmer had his best game in an Imps shirt and showed his class; he’s pretty pacey too! A special mention for Michael Bostwick who consistently puts in a very good performance and I am becoming a big fan of his high flicks forward, one of which brought about a goal. Also, another tremendous home support in excess of 7,000 – long may that continue.

Keep the faith; next up Grimsby Town!
