“Renewed contracts go beyond the ability of players now. It comes down to survival of the club.”

Views from sedgleyimp following the release of the retained list: “Since the turn of the year, the Coronavirus pandemic has affected all aspects of life and tonight, as our beloved Lincoln City reveal the list of players who will be released at the end of their contract the economic fall out for the club and individual players is clear to all supporters. Renewed contracts go beyond the ability of players now. It comes down to survival of the club.

Would the names of, in particular Michael Bostwick, Neal Eardley and Josh Vickers be included upon this list if the virus had not struck and the flow of money into the club come to a standstill? I suspect not. This is an extraordinary time for all and economics has unfortunately been the overriding requirement at this time. Our esteemed chairman has already said as much this evening.

So the list of those released isn’t that much of a shock. Those on higher wages have become the unfortunate fallout of the pandemic. We will miss these players at the club, and they now find themselves wondering where their personal futures lie.

All Lincoln supporters know why these players have been released and whether you think we are now poorer on the playing side, yesterday’s announcement and decisions go beyond that. This is about the survival of this football club we all love.

To the players who have worn the Lincoln shirt with honour and pride, I want to send out my personal thanks and best wishes. When we consider in years to come those players who we admired there are many upon this released list who will feature highly.”

berksimps: “What a sad way for some of the players, who have been integral to the success of Lincoln City in recent years, to leave the Club.

Good luck to all of them, and a big thank you…”

IMP757: “As sad as it is to see, I’m not at all surprised by this retained list. Football as a whole is in a massive transition period and LCFC is no different.

It would be more surprising to see Bostwick and Eardley offered lucrative deals in the current situation than what we have here.

Some absolutely top players on that list, whose contributions to the club will be felt for years to come.”

Luke Imp: “Only bothered about Eardley and Bostwick on that list.

Eardley was always going to be a difficult one to keep because I think more and more players will stay local to reduce travelling costs.

Boz you’d keep, but he would presumably have been a higher earner.

MA might have kept Vickers as a number two but I think the rest were as expected. Two or three still under contract MA might look to move on but that’s incredibly difficult now.”

Casperimp: “I can’t believe that some people think players should have been offered contracts. How exactly are the club actually going to pay these contracts. At this point in time the club is in no position to offer contracts because they have no idea when we will be playing football again.

It’s a real shame to see some of those go but a sign of the times I am afraid.”

Snats: “Devastated about Bossie, one of my favourite players I’ve ever seen play for us. Obviously the current situation has left us in a difficult position. What matters is that we still have a football club when the dust settles and anything else has to take a back seat, unfortunately.”

hulloutpost: “The released list is what I thought/feared (for some) would happen. Of the 13 under contract, I reckon MA only sees about 8 of those as first-team squad by his choice and some of them not starters. I don’t think there is a single senior player in the 13 that MA wouldn’t move on given a chance either – Coker, Payne, Bolger not been the first choice and even Harry A has been in and out. The next few months will continue to be utterly bizarre. When football clubs re-emerge at our level there are going to be big winners and big losers such will be the seismic change. It is going to be fascinating.”
