1. Who scored the goal that knocked First Division Notts County out of the League Cup at Meadow Lane on 27 October 1981?

a) George Shipley
b) Tony Cunningham
c) Derek Bell
d) Glenn Cockerill

Cunningham with the first (1-0), Cockerill with the second (2-2), Shipley with the winner (3-2).

I still remember Alastair Burnet on News At Ten when we got home: “And, horror of horrors, Notts County of the First Division two, Lincoln City of the Third Division three.”

2. Which club did Lincoln beat in their first-ever play-off semi-final?

a) Huddersfield Town
b) Macclesfield Town
c) Grimsby Town
d) Scunthorpe United

It was good old Scunthorpe, managed by Lincoln City fans’ favourite Brian Laws. City won an incredible first leg 5-3 at Sincil Bank on 10 May 2003, with goals from a Simon Weaver header, a Paul Mayo net-buster, a Paul Smith tap-in and two late crackers from substitute Simon Yeo. Super-sub Yeo was the difference again at Glanford four days later, running through to seal a 6-3 aggregate win with two minutes to go.

3. Why did David Calderhead Jnr resign as manager in May 1924?

a) He was appointed manager of Chelsea
b) He was taking over a hotel
c) He was emigrating to South Africa
d) He fell out with chairman Sam Tonge over player wages

He resigned to run the New Market Hotel, which still stands in Sincil Street adjacent to Central Market. Originally opened in 1856, it was owned by Lincoln brewers Dawber & Company (who were also heavily involved in founding Lincoln City FC) until they sold out to Mowbray & Co in 1905.

His father David Calderhead Snr was the one who resigned to become manager of Chelsea, a job he carried out with great distinction for 26 years.

4. Who is the youngest player to appear for City’s first team in a competitive fixture?

a) Shane Nicholson
b) Jack Hobbs
c) Jordan Thomas
d) Carl Dawson

The record is held by Jordan Thomas, who made his City debut as a substitute in the Conference match against Mansfield Town at Sincil Bank on 18 October 2011 at the age of 16 years 71 days.

The record was held for many years by goalkeeper Carl Dawson, who made his one appearance for the club in a Division Three North match at Barrow on 21 April 1951 at the age of 16 years 300 days.

Nicholson made his debut as a substitute in a League Cup tie at Charlton Athletic on 23 September 1986 at the age of 16 years 112 days, thereby taking the overall record from Dawson. He then made his Football League debut against Burnley at Turf Moor on 22 November 1986, aged 16 years 172 days, which also took the Football League record from Dawson.

Nicholson’s Football League record was taken by Jack Hobbs when he made his solitary Imps appearance as a stoppage-time substitute against Bristol Rovers on 15 August 2005, aged 16 years 149 days. That remains the club’s Football League record today.

5. Which City player missed the Munich air disaster through injury?

a) Ian Greaves
b) Albert Scanlon
c) Brian Birch
d) Roy Killin

It was reserve full-back Ian Greaves, who did not travel to the game in Munich because of a thigh injury. Greaves had the unenviable task of then taking over the left-back slot vacated by legendary United skipper Roger Byrne, playing in the emotional 3-0 FA Cup fifth round win over Sheffield Wednesday thirteen days later. United went all the way to the FA Cup Final, losing 2-0 to Bolton. He remained in the side as United somehow managed to finish First Division runners-up in 1958-59, but lost his place as Busby began to build his second great team. Greaves joined City in December 1960 as the Imps struggled unsuccessfully against relegation from the Second Division. He moved back to his native Oldham at the end of that season after making 13 appearances for the Imps.

Birch was one of the very early Busby Babes but had left Manchester United for Wolves in 1952, long before the crash. Killin was also an early product of the United sausage machine, but had also left Old Trafford in the early 1950s.

England U23 international winger Albert Scanlon was badly injured in the crash, suffering a broken leg, fractured skull and severe kidney damage. Although he returned and played in every game of the 1958-59 season (scoring an impressive 16 goals from the wing), Sir Bobby Charlton believes he was not the same player afterwards, and Scanlon’s career path thereafter tends to confirm that. He arrived at Sincil Bank in February 1962 after a brief spell with Newcastle, and only stayed a season before joining Mansfield. He retired in 1966 at the age of 31.

Scanlon suffered from kidney problems in later life which caused his admission to hospital in October 2009. He died there on 22 December at the age of 74. Having originally suffered kidney damage in the crash, was Scanlon actually the 24th victim of the Munich air disaster?

In June 2014, Charlton unveiled a road named in his team mate’s honour: Scanlon Lane can be found on a new housing estate in Pendleton, Salford.

6. Which is the only non-English club to have knocked City out of the FA Cup?

a) Wrexham
b) Cardiff City
c) Glasgow Rangers
d) Newport County

Glasgow Rangers, in the fifth round on 29 January 1887 (3-0). Rangers reached the semi-final before losing 3-1 to eventual winners Aston Villa. The Scottish FA banned its members from entering the English FA Cup at the end of that season. It was also the last game Rangers played at their 7,000 capacity Kinning Park ground before moving to the ground now known as First Ibrox at the end of that season.

7. How many players did Colin Murphy sign from Stockport County in 1987?

a) Three
b) Four
c) Five
d) Six

Five: Trevor Matthewson, Mark Sertori and Phil Brown all arrived before the start of the season, and all three played in the opening day punch-up at Barnet. David Mossman signed towards the end of the first week after the defeats at Barnet and Weymouth, and scored twice on his debut against Dagenham. Clive Evans – perhaps the key signing of the season – arrived in mid-September and made his debut in the 4-0 win over Enfield.

8. How were all the club’s records lost in September 1929?

a) Manager Harry Parkes left them on a train
b) They were loaned to the Football League, who promptly lost them
c) They were burned in a fire
d) They were stolen from the secretary’s office

The original South Park Stand burned down on 16 September 1929 after a home match against Port Vale. The secretary’s office was located there, and all club records were lost.

It’s replacement was much loved by generations of City supporters, and survived in truncated form until 1992.

9. Which other club has hosted Football League games at Sincil Bank?

a) Scunthorpe United
b) Notts County
c) Sheffield United
d) Gainsborough Trinity

Gainsborough Trinity, at various times between 1896 and 1912. The Northolme was originally owned by the town’s cricket team, requiring Trinity to seek an alternative venue when the cricket and football seasons overlapped.

Both Notts County (Trent Bridge until 1910) and Sheffield United (Bramall Lane until 1975) encountered similar difficulties, although neither moved any fixtures to Lincoln.

10. And a tough one to finish with. Which ex-international Imp is the odd man out?

a) Dick Krzywicki
b) David Phillips
c) Jock Dodds
d) Jim McCalliog

David Phillips – the other three all scored against England in an international match. Phillips did appear in a Welsh win over England, but Mark Hughes scored the only goal at Wrexham on 2 May 1984.

Krzywicki gave Wales a 40th-minute lead against England in the Home International Championship game on 18 April 1970. The goalkeeper? A certain Gordon Banks. Francis Lee equalised in the 70th minute in front of 50,000 at Ninian Park.

Dodds famously scored a hat-trick against England in a wartime international on 18 April 1942, watched by 91,000 at Hampden Park. Scotland won 5-4.

McCalliog scored what proved to be the winner in the infamous European Championship tie at Wembley on 15 April 1967. McCalliog scored at the near post in the 87th minute (also against Banks) as Scotland ran out 3-2 winners in front of 99,063. A certain segment of the Scottish media incredibly believed it made Scotland world champions, and some Scots believe that to this day. What is not commonly acknowledged is that Scotland kicked England off the pitch that day. England finished the match with eight fit players: Jimmy Greaves was unable to run, Ray Wilson could hardly walk, and Jack Charlton played the majority of the match at centre-forward hobbling with a broken toe. Unsurprisingly, Sir Alf Ramsey was not happy with the refereeing; interestingly, the referee Gerhard Schulenburg was German.

An alternative answer could be that Dodds is the only one never to win a proper full cap. Although he appeared regularly for Scotland, they were all during the Second World War, and were therefore unofficial.
