1. Which player did Colin Murphy call ‘the best player in non-league football’ when he signed him?

c) Phil Lyons

Signed (I think) from Sutton Town after relegation in the summer of 1979, Lyons somewhat predictably never kicked a ball in anger for Lincoln.

2. Having become City’s all-time record scorer when he scored his 111th goal for the club against West Ham on 11 December 1954, what did Andy Graver do the following week?

a) He signed for Leicester City

…for a club record £27,500. What is not widely known is that the fee represented Leicester’s club record fee paid, and was only £2,500 below the British transfer record at the time (Danny Blanchflower from Aston Villa to Spurs just the week before). Although Graver scored in his first two games, things did not work out and Leicester were relegated from the First Division. Graver returned to Lincoln for £14,000, but the club actually made very little on the deal because a large part of the original £27,500 had never been paid by Leicester.

3. Why is left-back Sean Newton unique in City’s history?

d) He is the only defender to score a hat-trick

…which he did against Alfreton Town in the 5-1 FA Cup 4th qualifying round replay win at Sincil Bank on 28 October 2014. There were mitigating circumstances – Alfreton midfielder Anthony Howell was forced to play in goal after injuries left them without a recognised goalkeeper. An appeal to the FA to permit them to sign an emergency goalkeeper fell on deaf ears, no surprise there. One of Newton’s three goals was a penalty, with a brace from Delano Sam-Yorke completing an easy win.

4. Who was the first Imp to be capped by the USA?

b) Ade Coker

Coker won all 5 of his caps in September and October 1984, with Lichaj winning the first of his 16 caps in October 2010. Although Trevis and McGeough both emigrated to the USA, they never made the national side.

5. What unfortunate hat-trick did Ben Coker notch up in April 2009?

a) Three different clubs were fined for fielding him as an ineligible player

Strange, but true. Histon, Barton Rovers and Bury Town were all fined by their respective leagues for fielding Coker as an ineligible player during 2008-09 season. Coker had failed to inform any of the three clubs that he had spent time playing abroad for Ånge IF in Sweden.

6. Which future City chairman was on the club’s books as a player under manager Ron Gray?

c) Bob Dorrian

As Bob revealed in his article in Six Years In Purgatory.

7. Which player holds the record for the most appearances for England ‘C’ while on the books at Lincoln?

b) Jordan Burrow

Burrow won three caps while at Lincoln, all during the 2014-15 season. Alex Woodyard, Elliott Whitehouse and Jon Nolan all won one cap each while at Lincoln; Woodyard was the England captain, and Whitehouse the only one to score (a header against Estonia on 15/11/2016).

8. Why was legendary club secretary Jack Strawson fined 10s in August 1914?

d) For failing to observe a blackout

Someone left a light on in the club offices on High Street during the very early days of the WWI Zeppelin blackout; as club secretary, Strawson had to pay the fine.

9. What is the connection between City players Arthur Hulme, Peter Mackin and Tom Asnip?

c) They were all killed in action during WWI

There were seven former Imps killed during the conflict:

9 August 1916: James Comrie
3 October 1916: Arthur Hulme
9 April 1917: Peter Mackin
15 July 1917: Thomas Strong
16 November 1917: George Kennedy
22 March 1918: Harry Potter
24 July 1918: Tom Asnip

10. How many times were Lincoln shown live on television during the 2016-17 season?

d) Twelve

8 National League, 4 FA Cup.
