Lincoln City versus Oxford United is another fixture that is a relative latecomer to the Football League party, dating back only to 1962 when Oxford finally won election to the elite after nine unsuccessful applications. Indeed, Lincoln had the honour of being the first visitors to the dreaming spires on Football League business, going down 2-1 on Wednesday 22 August 1962. Not only was that Oxford’s first home game in the Football League, but it was also Lincoln’s first-ever away game in the Fourth Division, having been relegated from the second tier in successive seasons. Oxford struggled, to begin with, finishing just two points clear of a re-election fight in both of their first two seasons in the League. Things improved rapidly after that as Birmingham City legend Arthur Turner took them from the Southern League to the Second Division in six years. The clubs have met intermittently since then, with Oxford having the advantage with sixteen wins to Lincoln’s twelve.

Playing connections have been relatively common with Colin Greenall, Gary Bannister, Paul Wanless, Lance Key, Wayne Biggins, Matthew Bound, Jefferson Louis, Gavin Gordon, Jamie Hand, Jude Stirling, Rob Duffy, Luke Foster, Marvin Robinson, Matt Green, Ryan Semple, Kevin Sandwith, Francis Green, Ben Futcher, Sam Slocombe, Jack Payne and Rob Dickie appearing for both clubs since 1990.
