Lincoln and Northampton first crossed swords in an FA Cup fifth qualifying round tie way back in December 1921, when the team from Division Three (South) took the honours at Sincil Bank by 2-1. That was the equivalent of today’s first round, and Northampton went on to beat Lancaster and Reading before bowing out to Stoke in a replay. Northampton repeated the dose two seasons later with a 5-1 home win over the Imps at the same stage of the competition, and that was to be that until the two sides met for the first time on league duty in 1961-62. Ever since then it has been honours even with 15 wins each and an astonishing 25 draws.
