Lincoln and Crewe share a history stretching all the way back beyond the earliest days of the Second Division. The sides first met in the inaugural season of The Combination in 1888-89, playing just the one fixture on 19 April. Both clubs became founder members of the Second Division in 1892, the first-ever Football League meeting being a 1-1 Boxing Day draw in front of 2,000 festive Imps. The rivalry was shelved in 1896 when Crewe lost their Football League place but resumed in earnest when they returned as founder members of Division Three (North) in 1921. Of the 109 games in all competitions, Lincoln have a slight advantage with 41 wins to Crewe’s 37. One of those was the club’s record league victory of course, the 11-1 slaughter on 29 September 1951 as the Imps marched to the Division Three (North) title. Poor Dennis Murray, 19 years of age, was making his Football League debut in goal for Crewe that day.

Playing connections have been frequent due to the long rivalry and having spent much of their time playing at the same level. Ashley Westwood, David Ridings, Julian Watts, Stefan Oakes, Adie Moses, Michael O’Connor, Anthony Elding, Alan Sheehan, Greg Pearson, Thierry Audel, Vadaine Oliver, Ross Etheridge and James Jones have all spent time with both clubs during the last 25 years.
