Q&A With Two Wigan Athletic Supporters

The last time The Imps faced tonight’s opponents at the DW Stadium was on Saturday 20th February. The Imps won 2-1 that afternoon. Callum Lang gave the hosts the lead in the 33rd minute, but just 60 seconds later City were level thanks to Anthony Scully. Tom Hopper scored the winner in the 73rd minute.

Ahead of tonight’s match, we have done a Q&A with two Wigan Athletic supporters, so thank you to Jason (Cockney Latic) and Adam (Wigan Athletic News Page) for answering our questions! The answers have been published on two pages. To get to the second set of answers, press “Click here for the second set of answers!” at the bottom right of the page.

First up, the answers provided by Jason:

How long have you supported Wigan Athletic?

Just a mere 44 years.

Where did you finish last season?

We just about scraped survival, using mainly our academy team.

What do you think of your manager?

He has done a fantastic job, firstly keeping us up last season with no resources at all. And secondly by constructing a team from nothing that seems to be doing pretty OK in this league.

What are your hopes and expectations for the 2021/22 season?

They have changed a bit due to results. If you had asked 6 weeks ago, I think myself and most fans would have quite happily seen us finish mid-table whilst rebuilding the team. As this team has decided to stuff easing into things slowly, we really do have imagine that we can at least be play-off contenders, if not automatic. But we really do have to see what happens when suspensions and injuries hit, to really see what this team is about.

One(s) to watch?

Will Keane and Callum Lang are the ones you need to watch. If they are on top form, they are unstoppable.

Which teams do you think will finish in the top six in League One?

Us (obviously), Wycombe, Sunderland, Rotherham, Sheff Weds and Ipswich.

Which teams do you think will finish in the bottom four in League One?

Crewe, Fleetwood, Shrewsbury and Cambridge.

What are your thoughts on Lincoln City?

You seem to be very inconsistent, and we hope you have one of those nights tonight but go on to have a great season.

What do you think the score will be?

If we get out of the blocks quickly, it could be 3-0 to Latics.

Random fact about your Club?

We won the FA Cup in 2013.

If you could steal one Lincoln City player for your own team, who would it be and why?

What are your proudest and most embarrassing moments as a Wigan Athletic supporter?

Winning the FA Cup obviously is up there as the proudest moment.

The most embarrassing was losing 9-1 to Spurs.

Who would you say is your most underrated player?

Thelo Aasgaard.

Do you have a Supporters Trust and what role do they play at the Club?

We have a Supporters Club that was instrumental (along with the Club SLO) in saving the club in administration. They have a supporter’s bar in the south stand of the DW Stadium, where fans of both sides can go for a drink, plus organise the away coaches to games.

Which was your favourite match involving Wigan Athletic?

For the comedy value, a 3-0 win over Bristol City where the referee sent off 5 players, 4 from Bristol…. It was a farce, but sticks in the memory.

Which was your least favourite match involving Wigan Athletic?

The Spurs game above mentioned and the 4-0 loss to Manchester United in the Carling Cup Final.

Do you have a Former Players Association at Wigan Athletic?

Yes. we do, Tommy Gore is the Chair of it.

And now for the answers provided by Adam:

How long have you supported Wigan Athletic?

35 years.

What do you think of your manager?

Exceptional. The job he did in administration, keeping us in League One and putting together a challenging squad for this season is nothing short of outstanding.

What are your hopes and expectations for the 2021/22 season?

At the start of the season, I ‘hoped’ for top 6 but ‘expected’ top half. This was because we had to completely rebuild in the summer. Now I ‘hope’ for promotion and ‘expect’ top 6.

One(s) to watch?

James McClean – Playing below his level Tom Naylor – Tidy midfielder Callum Lang – ‘One of our own’ breath-taking forward play from the academy graduate.

Wigan, Sunderland, Wycombe, Rotherham, Oxford and Ipswich.

Which teams do you think will finish in the bottom four in League One?

Crewe, Cambridge, Gillingham and Morecambe.

What are your thoughts on Lincoln City?

Best side we played in 2020/21. Bit of a play-off hangover I suspect, but I am sure they will be pushing for the top 6 again. Very good young manager who plays nice football.

What do you think the score will be?

2-0 to Wigan.

Random fact about your Club?

Wigan have the record attendance between 2 non-league sides outside of Wembley. Over 27000 at Springfield Park in a 2nd round FA Cup game v Hereford in the 1950s.

If you could steal one Lincoln City player for your own team, who would it be and why?

Scully. Really good goal-scoring record for such a young player.

What are your proudest and most embarrassing moments as a Wigan Athletic supporter?

Supporters club – Played a huge part in helping to save the club. Voice of the fans and run away coaches.

Not formally but there is a Facebook memories site and there are reunion matches/dinners. Best of luck for the season from the ‘Newcastle of League 1!’
