Ahead of Saturday’s match at home against Northampton Town in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.

1. Get the sponges out. The first thing we need to ensure is that the match goes ahead and when it does the pitch is in the best possible condition for us to play our football on. It’s only been a few short weeks since we played at Northampton and, to the players and managements credit, they adapted their game to deal with a pretty poor playing surface. We know that Northampton will look to play in a very direct manner. They did so at home and I just can’t imagine they’ll suddenly turn into 1970 Brazil for an away game. If we are to play our natural game, and that game will be good enough to beat them, we need the pitch to be in as good a condition as possible.

2. Speed of thought and play. We need to be on this game from the kick-off. Northampton will fill the defence and the longer the match goes without us breaching them, the more confident they will become. We need to force the play from the kick-off and put pressure of their defenders. We know that Cian Bolger will win much in the air, but his play on the ground is less assured. I say that keeping in mind that he is their best defender. Put the defence under pressure early and constantly will reap rewards.

3. Don’t get dragged down to their level. I suspect that Northampton will try and niggle our players. Memories of the game last month are fresh and they were quite a dirty side on the whole. I suspect that this is a deliberate tactic employed by Curle. Upset the opposition. Get them early bookings through retaliation. We need to be wise about this. We keep eleven on the pitch and this will be an easy win. If certain players fall for their ****housery (Liam Bridcutt I really am looking at you for this, both for your own performance but to lead as a captain for others), that win becomes more difficult to get.
