Michael Appleton: “What we have got is a group of players who are still learning.”

Michael Appleton briefed the press ahead of the Tuesday night fixture versus MK Dons.

Blackpool: MA thought the Imps played OK versus The Sea-siders. It was a clash of two styles with Blackpool playing a more direct style than they had earlier in the season. Overall he felt the players coped quite well.

What did please MA, was the attitude of the players, “It wasn’t just the fact we came back from the two-nil; it was the fact you could tell the players wanted to do something about it at half time…..but then to concede the second one quite early. That was probably the bigger indication for me, to the mentality and the willingness to not give up on the game….. then still have the strength to come back and get something from the game”.

MK Dons: There are no new injuries post-Blackpool. The players are stiff (bodied) and tired which is only to be expected in the circumstances. As a result, they have needed careful management yesterday and will need so, today.

MK are a good side that pass the ball really well. “We’ve got to be able to cope with that, deal with that and at the same time make sure if we do have good opportunities to counter-attack we make the most of it”.

The Propensity to Fall Behind in Recent Games: MA can’t put his finger on one single cause. Different approaches are tried be it warm-ups, meetings and so on. It’s not complacency, as, for example, MA is personally self-critical. He is always questioning and looking if things can be done differently or better.

“What we have got is a group of players who are still learning, still getting to know what it’s like to get up for every single game (exacerbated by the regular three-day turn arounds). All I do know is that all these experiences they’re getting at the minute are going to hold us in good stead, whether that’s the short term point of view tomorrow or Saturday; or at some point next season”.

MA went on to add, “Hopefully that spell will come to an end pretty quickly and we’ll start scoring the first goal more regularly. If we do that we’ll give ourselves a better chance”.
