“Michael Appleton should go back to basics and try to make us hard to beat.”

|

Following Saturday’s 6-0 defeat at home against Oxford United in Sky Bet League One, we asked our members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what NottyImp said:

1. The defence is slow and old. You might get away with the bonus experience brings you in League Two, but that margin is significantly reduced in League One where teams are a step-up in quality, speed of thought and action and fitness. We probably need to rest Eardley and bring Lewis in and then rotate the centre-backs.

2. Our rigid set-up doesn’t work anymore. Anderson barely touched the ball in the first half and was only marginally involved in play at other times. It’s like playing with 9 players as our wingers are neither getting the ball, not helping the defence much in mid-field.

3. Michael Appleton should go back to basics and try to make us hard to beat. It’s how we got here and attempting a “footballing revolution” as the Cowleys seems to have tried to do has not really worked. It may have, if they had stayed and melded the players and method over the first half of the season, but as soon as they left we became a rudderless ship, losing momentum by the game.
