Michael Appleton: “I don’t want anything really to interrupt that.”

Michael Appleton hinted that he may make slight team changes now League One status is confirmed. Prior to facing Accrington he also confirmed that contract renewal talks are underway.

Changes to the Team: MA confirmed there may be slight changes to the side but he still wants to finish the season well.

“I want to finish the season as strong as I possibly can and make sure I try and win the two games……(on squad players getting an opportunity) I think there’s certainly players who will be here next year who deserve the opportunity to get some minutes”.

The players have been patient. “You’ve got to earn that…earn the right to play in the team. That’s not just coming on for ten minutes and having a little bit of a bright spell or catching the eye of certain people after coming on for fifteen, twenty minutes. You’ve got to do it every single day in training; turn up and look like you want to be in the team. I think that as a group they’ve been obviously challenged this year. Stuff that’s gone against us a little bit, but ultimately yeah, it’s up to them to try and take the opportunity when it comes along”.

Out of Contract Players: Jez (George) has already made telephone calls to a number of the player’s agents, with MA involved in daily contact with the individuals themselves. Consequently, MA has a reasonable idea of those players who will possibly be retained or not.

What MA will not do at this point is inform anybody that they may be released, as he wants the season to be over when he does that. Doing so earlier could distract from performances.

“I don’t want anything really to interrupt that”.

MA highlighted that for the past couple of months there had been some really good (team) performances, including against the ‘bigger’ teams, even if there had been some harsh results along the way. He does not want to lose that or stray away from that position.
