Match Report v Morecambe

With Cowley to save us, last season gave us
a cabinet full of awards.
With the Football League nigh and the sun in the sky
the fans rolled up in their hordes.

But double, double hernia trouble
Habergham still wasn’t fit.
Ginnelly was out, and Luke was a doubt.
At least Raggett was still in our kit.

A Spit and a Lanc above Sincil Bank
set the scene for game number one.
The 8,000 there were fully aware
that the non-league nightmare was gone.

Right from the start, the Imps looked the part
– like a team on a mission and more.
Wave after wave, save after save
incredibly they just couldn’t score.

With Rhead looking mean, strong running from Green
the wingers had acres of space.
They had all the play in every way
but their finishing was a disgrace.

Bostwick bossed, but chances were lost
when strikers were put clean through.
Then a leap like Zoff saw Roche pull off
A worldie from Maguire-Drew.

So half time arrived and the scoreline contrived
to tell barely half of the story.
Keep banging the drum, the goals had to come
and City would grab all the glory.

The second half came with more of the same,
the Morecambe goal must be charmed.
They hadn’t a clue, but out of the blue
they took the lead and alarmed.

Still Woodyard schemed and the fans all dreamed
of a comeback to equal last season.
Shots and saves and blocks and close shaves
there was really no rhyme or reason.

Morecambe resisted, but Lincoln persisted
and Green made the game all square.
With two on the spin we would go on to win
and the fans would be walking on air.

But a point it must be, we couldn’t take three
– the winning goal proved elusive.
In 26 ways, it was one of those days.
The result was hardly conclusive.

But time will tell, and playing that well
we will win more games than we lose.
And if to boot, we can learn to shoot
Promotion may give us our dues.

In spite of the score, Morecambe were poor
– North Ferriby in disguise.
The National League beckons, my brother reckons.
It’s hard to believe otherwise.

With a win to our name, it’s a different game
Then City can really stand tall.
So to Devon we head, you can take it as read
that City will give it their all.
