Following last night’s 7-2 defeat at home against Liverpool in the Third Round of the League Cup, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. Sometimes in football you just have to hold your hands up and admit that some teams and players are better than us. They scored seven goals tonight and all of them were of superb quality. They rested some players but still filled their team with Internationals and players who will be playing at the highest level for a number of years. That was no kids team. Credit the opposition that they came with their A-game and it was just too much for us.

2. That said the players can hold their heads up high. We’ve all been to games where we’ve questioned the player’s attitudes and commitment. We shipped seven but this was not the performance that deserved such an apparent mauling. This was no 7-0 loss at Derby in the mid-’80s nor the 6-0 reverse at home to Barnet a few years later. The second half was full of commitment and effort and rewarded by two goals against the current Premier Champions. That effort and commitment was shown by Bradley’s shot in the last few seconds. The players kept their heads up and can be proud of that second half.

3. Taking aside the quality of the opposition, the other thing that worked against us tonight was the lack of a home support. Last season at home to Everton the supporters played a huge part in how that game unfolded. Tonight the lack of atmosphere worked against us, as it will for all clubs at our level when we are playing against the very best.
