From efl.com: “Simpson is a former international assistant referee, who officiated in many Champions League matches and other international fixtures. He opted for a career with the whistle after refereeing the 2012 National League Play-Off Final between York City and Luton Town. He was then appointed to the EFL Referees List in 2012/13 and in his five years on the list has refereed over 100 matches.”

Jeremy Simpson has been the man in the middle for 2 matches involving Lincoln City:

03/04/12: Lincoln City 0-1 Cambridge United (Conference) – 1 yellow card
16/02/19: Lincoln City 2-2 Stevenage (League Two) – 5 yellow cards

TOTALS: Matches: 2 Yellow Cards: 6 Red Cards: 0

He received an average rating of 3.94 following the 2-2 draw at home against Stevenage in February 2019. Some of the comments can be found below:

Impalex: “Ok, I have slept on it. Still, a poor ref who was mostly incompetent even if he did get our first goal correct and overruled the lino. Andrade was clearly struck in the face by an outstretched arm with no reaction from the lino just feet away from him.

I cannot comment on whether the ball crossed the line from Akinde; totally wrong angle for me.

SIX minutes??? Not on your life!

2.5.”

Snats: “6. Thought he got most decisions right but missed a couple of obvious ones, and inconsistent with his punishment of time-wasting. Also very lenient with his cards, but I’d prefer that over a Mike Dean type who pulls them out for everything.”

GreenNeedle: “I thought he wasn’t too bad. The crowd obviously have red and white tinted specs on but they were calling “you don’t know what you’re doing” when Andrade twice ran into the player.

If they were fouls (as the crowd vehemently perceived them as) then Matt Rhead fouled Joey Barton the other year.

Then they were chanting “you don’t know what you’re doing” again for a penalty claim on Akinde when Akinde had lost control of the ball and went down too easily.

Toffolo wasn’t booked for taking 5 or 6 seconds too long on a throw-in. He was booked for constantly taking ages on throws like he does every week.

There were the usual odd decisions that every ref is guilty of, inconsistent advantages played, penalising some fouls but not equivalents at other times but overall I would rate the ref 7/10 and tell the Co-op to try and watch the game with a little bit of reality/neutrality.”

Jeremy Simpson: 2020/21 Stats:

12/09/20: Millwall 0-0 Stoke City (Championship) – 2 yellow cards
23/09/20: Fleetwood Town 2-5 Everton (EFL Cup) – 1 yellow card

TOTALS: Matches: 2 Yellow Cards: 3 Red Cards: 0

Jeremy Simpson oversaw 29 matches last season, showing a total of 100 yellow cards and 8 red cards.

He brandished his yellow card on 8 occasions during the Fulham v Bristol City (1-2) match in the Championship.

He took in 40 matches in the 2018/19 season. During that season he showed 163 yellow cards and 7 red cards.

Simpson was the man in the middle for 42 matches during the 2017/18 season, during which he showed 167 yellow cards and 10 red cards.

He was most card happy in the match between Aston Villa and Cardiff City in the Championship, which finished 1-0 to the home side. He showed 9 yellow cards during this match.
