Following Saturday’s 2-1 win at home against Morecambe in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learnt from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. We are such an organised team and I’m not sure that is reflected in match comments. I always find it fascinating to read match threads after being in attendance at a match and see the differing views that are often written from those streaming and posted during a match and from those who attend a game and see aspects of play that cameras on their own do not pick up. One of those aspects is just how professionally organised this team has become and I don’t think it is something which has received its due appreciation. The banks of defending are retained irrespective of who is filling a specified role. Players are filling in for others when necessary. Players are starting to make the right decisions at the right time. This often means we do play it around at the back and slow the game down. When you are winning well isn’t that just good game management? All these facets show how the team is set up to be organised and all the players are on board with it.

2. There are still small margins in football. We were the better team on Saturday and deserved the win, but it could have so very different on another day. Their manager suggested that they deserved something from the game. I’m not sure that’s right but on another day Max Sanders’ free kick doesn’t get a deflection that wrong-foots their keeper and Stockton’s terrific effort in the second half hits the inside of the post and goes in. That’s the small margins we deal with each and every game.

3. We have competition for places in the squad. Consider the welcome return of Tom Hopper on Saturday and the strength of the bench. Consider that we left out Adam Jackson, arguably our best defender over recent games. Consider that we are still awaiting the return from injury of Danny Mandriou, Ted Bishop, and Lewis Montsma. Should we ever be blessed with a fully fit squad there are competition for places throughout the team and that can only be a good thing for how this season progresses from here.
